im saying deads dont make your waist grow imo. dont know if you knew that, but you proved my point nonetheless. i don't think they have an effect on increasing your waist size, the only thing that would make the tape measure get bigger from deads would be the added growth from the erectors, which wouldnt contribute to an increase in abdominal distension

Look, I am not one to disparage, but I also would not post that picture as an example of great back development. Your back looked decent, but it just didn't strike me as something one would post to contradict the recommendation of deadlifts for one's back routine. As for my upper back, it has always been a strong point. So to answer your question, my lats were significantly thicker and wider.

But, can you say something about how the deadlifts build the back. In the properly executed deadlift, it doesn't seem to me that any part of the back (except the erector spinae) goes through a significant range of motion. If this is the case, how does the deadlift work to build, say, upper back thickness?

    tension

his upper back muscles might not move like in traditional exercises, but something is keeping his arms from ripping off his body....his upper back

there's more physics involved but that's the basic idea

Deads work the traps which run halfway down your back. In addition, they work the lats etc. because you have to use them to keep the bar close to your body during the pull. They obviously work the spinal erectors heavily. Deads will not do a lot for lats, but they are very good for traps and spinal erectors.

Maybe shelby is just saying that if you get brutally strong on deadlifts, rows and chins you more than likely will have a big powerful back. If you do a lot of machine movements going for the burn and feel in the muscle, then it may be hit or miss.

I would be tough not to have a nice back under those circumstances...

Bottom line....put weight on the bar an lift it. There would be a lot more massive and dense bodybuilders if guys and girls did'nt fear the weight.
