Default Are Organic Foods All Hype?

    Organic food benefits a 'myth'

Food grown without pesticides or herbicides should not be promoted as healthier because there’s no evidence to show that it contains more nutrients than conventionally grown food, claims a major University of Sydney study.

According to the author of the study, conducted by the School of Molecular Bioscience, consumers should stick with commercially grown because they are cheaper and, therefore, people could eat more of them.

To reach the conclusion, the study surveyed the international literature on organic produce, conducted laboratory analyses of Australian foods and surveyed Australian health professionals about organics.

The results will be published in the international science journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition.

"We conclude from the analysis that the nutrient composition differs very little between foods that are produced by organic and conventional methods," the report’s author, Associate Professor Samir Samman, told The Sunday Telegraph.

"Some health professionals believe that organic foods have more nutrients and elicit favourable effects on This advice is given despite the lack of scientific evidence to support it."

It is a marketing ploy to get the hippies and tree hungers to spend their money.

Organic foods are more than just grown without pesticides or herbicides. The big deal about organic foods now is that they are not genetically engineered like commercially grown foods.

In a nutshell, crops weren't living because of the pesticides and herbicides sprayed on them, so scientists decided to genetically alter the food so that it could withstand the chemicals. Then we decided to take it further by making the food grow faster, and bigger. That is why most food produced now is genetically altered.

We conclude from the analysis that the nutrient composition differs very little between foods that are produced by organic and conventional methods
doesn't that sound kind of like an oxymoron??? Organic is NATURAL growing of food, and now society thinks its not normal.

I do think that a lot of organic foods are not healthy. For instance, organic 'agave syrup' is still shitty sugar, just without pesticides/herbicides used. However, I think the way in which food is produced is of much greater importance. Grass fed beef, raw dairy, wild caught seafood, unprocessed fats - these are the important ones. And in response to the opening of the article, its not "more nutrients" that should be considered the benefit of organic foods, but the absence of harmful additives and chemicals.

Fact is though if all we had was organic products we'd all be starving!!!! The planet is far too over crowded for conventional farming to support us.

Agreed, my only point is that organic covers alot of processes (or eliminates them) I don't agree with genetic altering of my food. Pesticides are necessary, I agree, there are far too many insects killing and ruining farms all over the world.

i always wonder why people buy things like organic bananas or pineapples... whats the point of buying that? I can understand meats, eggs and soft skined fruits/veggies like tomatoes and apples, but some fruits have hard packaging thats gonna make the pesticides almost impossible to penetrate....

buy organic, but buy smart regardless.

I'll spend a few extra bucks to avoid pesticides whether or not its proven. I agree with genesis though, you have to know what needs to be organic. If you peel it, you dont need organic. I like organics/grassfed/free range meat just because I'm a bit of a bleeding heart for animals.

I think carl had mentioned something to the effect that by no using pesticides, produce has to build up its own "immune system" and produces a heartier product.
Organics, like everything else will be perverted to make more money.

Not a hype. But Monsanto has enough resources to strong arm any agency or study to have you believe what they want you to believe.

Sale of organic produce is up, which Monsanto can not control or patent so conveniently a lot of these articles have hit mainstream media lately.

Monsanto want everyone to use their seeds and pesticides for which they have patent and can only be bought from them.

Can't believe how gullible some people are...

Ahh very true Chris but the Omega 3s and CLA in grass fed beef/buffalo is 5 times higher than feed lot cattle and they do not get that Estrogen shot in their ear 3 days before slaughter and fed 'hot mix' which is nothing but oats mixed with newspaper bulk.

A HUGE plus! The body is like a river if you dump some chemicals into it the water will clean itself but if you continue polluting the river like the body then there comes disease and all sorts of illnesses.
