and Lance, you're exactly who I had in mind when I made this thread
just out of curiousity, did you ever work with Marty Garner (ChamPain)?
and the comment about the "very selfish lifestyle" certainly sounds like it can apply to bbing...no wonder we tend to "get" one another

Trained by The Great Malenko. Been wrestling for 17 years. Names used "Lord of Dsicipline (PWI top 500 1993 #288), Giant Outlaw, Super Destroyer... still wrestle occasionally. Alot of the people that currently wrestle and post sacred info on internet boards have no idea what would of happenned to them years ago.

Do you have to have a long wrestling backround in order to wrestle for a big show?
I think I'm black.

I was supposed to go to Lance Storm's school in Calgary for May but my accomodations fell through at the last minute. I'm pretty upset about it, as I was preparing for close to a year.

What worked for me ...
Breaking in was tougher then (the 1980s) because the business was still very closed and you had to find your way in. Through knowing legendary announcer Gordon Solie, I was able to get behind the curtain. Then, a suggestion from Steve Keirn got me from ringside photog into the ring.
I had already been trained in freestyle wrestling and martial arts (MMA before MMA was cool) and I had enough size at 6'3" 235 to not get squashed in training. Even after lessons from Dean Malenko and more tips from Bob Armstrong and Adrian Street, it was a year before I was really competent to work the big civic centers and regional TV. To celebrate (!), I invested in new gear and changed my colors to represent a transition.
Here's something to consider ... in a lot of the smaller indy shows, you might find the champ is also the booker or is at least way into the ear of the owner/promoter. I preferred to do a lot of guest spots around the south and that meant would usually get the best wrestler in the locker room. That was actually good because I could aks who trained them and if they were only one generation removed from a legit national or regional star, I felt safe in their hands. When I had no idea who their trainer was or, God help me, they said they were "self-trained," it might be sppoky.
The best guys were the ones I never had to say much to, the ones that could read my body and know where to go next, and who knew how to read the crowd. If there was time to fill or a spot got missed, they could actually wrestle. I worked a main event with a guy who only wanted to know the finish. The rest of the way, I just said "get a hold and I'll work out of it and then you do the same." We said less than 10 words to each other the whole way and one was "sorry" after an inadvertent head butt.
A couple of tips:
Cardio - You gotta be able to go at a faster pace now (short attention span audiences) and not get winded after five minutes.
Free Weights - Even in an exhibition sport (I hate the phrase "sports entertainment"), picking up a 200-300 pound man requires the ability to move unsupported (and sometimes unbalanced) weight.
Listen - There is a lot of wisdom to be picked up if you'll shut up and let the men who've been around clue you in. If a veteran offers advice after a match, take it, even if that man never had his own action figure. he guys we used to call "enhancement talent" got that name because they knew how to make the stars look good.
