Pay the cell phone bill, or buy a car?
While cellular broadband plans have gotten a lot more affordable, they weren't always that way. Just a few years ago, just a little bit of internet surfing even in your home network would have cost a fortune, as the story of a Massachusetts father and son Bob and Bryan St. Germain goes.
Bryan St. Germain connected a cell phone belonging to his father's account to a laptop for tethered internet access, reported the AP. While this wasn't a new activity, what had changed was that a two-year Verizon data plan promotion was no longer in effect.
The result: an $18,000 phone bill.
While Verizon cut the bill to $9,000 before handing it off to a collections agency, the St. Germains still never paid it. Thankfully for them, Verizon has finally said that it will no longer attempt to pursue the remaining balance, though it will still leave a mark on their credit report.
This dismissal aside, Verizon points out that such cases are "exceptionally rare," so keep an eye on your data use.
