Normal blood sugar after a fast is 80-100 from a CLINICAL perspective. Everyone has his or her own individual variations and normative values. Some may feel feelings of hypoglycemia while still in the 70's which would not be CLINICALLY hypoglycemic.
If your 126 or higher while fasted (12 full hours) then you have what is known as impaired fasting glucose which should warrant a 2nd test on another date to confirm the diagnosis. A fasted or non fasted reading that is 200 or higher is a clear indicator of high blood sugar and a possible diagnosis of diabetes.
An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed to gauge insulin receptivity and glucose clearance capability when further differential diagnosis is required to detect diabetes. After 3-4 days of normal carbohydrate feeding (at least 200g a day) a 12 hour overnight fast is required, 75g dose of dextrose mixed in 300ml of water is consumed. Blood sugars are measured every 30 minutes for 2 hours. Values should not breach 150 if the person is healthy.
Case Study Example:
I for example feel classic symptoms of low blood sugar at 75mg/dl or less of which I have confirmed with test strips on several occasions. If I go more than 2 hours without a decent/balance meal and then workout, I tend to fall into this state pretty quickly. If I go 4 hours period without a decent/balance meal, the same thing happens. Yet this would not be a clinical since I am above 60mg/dl.
