9-Year-Old Goes for Bench Press Record
9-Year-Old Goes for Bench Press Record
I know, I know, when you read that headline you thought, "What kind of parent would push a 9-year-old to try to set a new bench press record?" But once you watch the video, I think you'll agree that 9-year-old Aaron Brooks has a father who seems to be genuinely concerned about his son's health and fitness, and not just pushing him to turn into a miniature Mariusz Pudzianowski.
Aaron's father, John Brooks, coaches his son in wrestling and says that his son's workouts consist of light dumbbells and "a lot of push-ups."
"He's not really a weightlifter," John Brooks says. "He's a wrestler who happens to be very strong."
Aaron will compete in a sanctioned powerlifting event in New Jersey in June, and his goal is to break the record for 8 and 9-year-olds in his weight class (kids who weigh less than 88 pounds). The current record is 77 pounds, and Aaron says he can do more than 90, so he's got a good chance of breaking the record.
And as long as Aaron will be supervised and have a good spotter, I say more power to him. I suppose there are injury risks associated with being a child weightlifter, but then again there are plenty of health risks associated with being a child who sits around watching TV all day. There are worse things than teaching young kids to try to push themselves physically.

ha at this rate he will have over 1000 by the time he hits college.
I dont see the issue with the parents at all, kid is into athletics.....if a kid racked up 50 trophies from baseball or football, theres no problem, wants to set a bench press record....omg prime time news....
