Fairley, Ponder, OLB Houston visiting
By Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Mar 31, 2011
The stream of pre-draft visits by NFL prospects continued at One Bills Drive Thursday as Buffalo hosted a trio of top flight prospects.
Auburn defensive lineman Nick Fairley, Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder and Georgia OLB Justin Houston were all at the team’s facility Thursday morning.
Buffalo’s personnel department was well represented at Fairley’s pro day on March 8th with a contingent that included Bills GM Buddy Nix. The SEC Defensive Player of the Year had a school record 24 tackles for loss in 2010 along with 11.5 sacks to lead the conference.
“The strengths I think I bring to the field are I’m a great pass rusher and a great run stopper,” he said. “I try to dominate inside in the middle and I think that’s what teams are looking for and I hope I can be that guy that they look for.”
Fairley, who will reportedly visit with eight NFL clubs picking in the top 10, has been widely forecast as a sure fire top 10 pick.
Perhaps no prospect has as much history as Christian Ponder does with Bills head coach Chan Gailey. The Florida State signal caller has known Gailey since high school.
“We had a prior relationship,” said Ponder. “When he was the coach at Georgia Tech they recruited me pretty hard and they were probably my second choice next to Florida State. I actually had a good relationship with (Bills offensive coordinator/running backs) Coach (Curtis) Modkins. He was the guy that recruited me personally. It was good to work with them at the Senior Bowl and was a pretty unique situation.”
Ponder was named the Senior Bowl MVP after going 7-13 passing for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the South Team's 24-10 win.

Falcons TE Gonzalez hints at retirement if lockout lingers
Tony Gonzalez isn't ready to end his brilliant NFL career, but the Atlanta Falcons tight end acknowledges he already might have played his final game if labor unrest wipes out the 2011 season.
"That would be devastating because I don't want to go out like that," Gonazalez said Tuesday in a sitdown with Rich Eisen on "NFL Total Access."
Gonzalez added that he feels great physically, but he doesn't know how his body would react if it were forced out of football for a year.
"That would be the only reason I would more than likely not come back," Gonzalez said. "If we miss the whole season and I have to sit out a year, I just think, at 35, sitting out a whole year of football and waiting for it to come back, I just don't know if my body could. I just want to be smart about it."CutlerAthletics.com

Judge: Lockout ruling to take ‘couple of weeks’
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The first quarter of the legal fight between NFL players and owners has finally started, and the referee in the case is already calling for the final whistle.
Even that may not be enough to get these two sides back together in what has turned into a bitter dispute.
U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson told both sides Wednesday that it could take "a couple of weeks" for her to rule on the players’ request to lift the lockout imposed by owners and let them get back to the job.
In the meantime, she urged both sides to get back to the bargaining table and hammer out a deal before she makes the first of what could be many legal decisions.
"It seems to me both sides are at risk, and now is a good time to come back to the table," Nelson said.CutlerAthletics.com

I'm tired of this. Players practicing amongst themselves is better than nothing but organized practice such as ota's and minicamp is still needed. When and if they end the lockout, they would have lost a lot of sessions. The quality of play will suffer.
