Chris, when training precontest do you have your athletes use their offseason training split (i.e. heavy weight, less frequency, and less volume) or do you increase their frequency and volume in an attempt to burn more calories?

Welcome aboard. I have read many of your mass building articles online. However, I am torn between your method and Palumbo's. Would one diet benefit someone who is 30 years old w/ some muscle built over time, with a little bit more body fat then wanted, over the other? 210 lbs @ around 18% bf 5'11" Thank you for your time.

Yea Dawn I remember. You were quite amazing. A-m-a-z-i-n-g. I cant remember what my neighbors name is, but I do remember a bodybuilder; your stength was your condition; weakness was your biceps....

I have bodybuilders, for the most part, stick pre contest with what built that mass in the first place. The next step may typically be adding more sets (volume) or training a little bit more frequently. For example, if someone is training 2 days on 1 off in the off season, I would probably have them move to a 3 day on 1 day off plan simply to increase the total workoad ont he body which of cource burns more calories and helps lean you down. Bodybuilders just get too crazy and go the the extreme which usually leaves them over trained when getting ready for a show. For me, I like to stick with stimulating the msucle; heavy weight while dieting and try to get the fat off with the diet

I really am unfamilar with Dave's diet methods, but I am familair with his results. So there has to be something to it! That said, I really cant say which is better. Like I said I believe in a previous post, I try to customize plans for people. I always tell people what works for one person will not work for another. And, just as important, what works for one person this year might not work for him next year! The body can be that fickle. One pro, a good one, I worked with about 3 years back told me that he had been working with someone who kept files on bodybuilders; their diets mostly. He asked me if I did that (kept files) and I said no. "I throw everything out after a show" He asked why; the answer is sismple; I dont want to be a slave to thinking that what worked for someone in 2005 will be his winning ticket in 2009. So; to answer your question more directly, I would say you can modify my diet(s) that are robably out there on line that are higher in carbs and bring the carbs down. I think ( I have not opened it in years) my Championship BB Book has mass gaining diet(s) in it for endomorphs

How well do you think Jay will do with the FST-7 training method?
I am using it currently and love it.

Chris, even this interval-type cardio session you recommend doing first thing in the morning on an empty stomach?? If someone starts their contest prep around 9%BF, how many sessions per week and how long would these interval sessions start out at??

    Chris,

Fat-Burners. Stimulant based fat burners. What are your stance on them?

Some say that when the body is stimulated into producing norepi artifically it can stress out the CNS, the adrenal glands etc... and cause a release in CORTISOL which is a physique-destroying hormone.

In a nutshell, fat-burners containing stimulants can cause one to lose muscle in a pre-contest phase.

Do you agree? I think if they are relied upon excessively, then yes. If used only for early morning cardio then I think they can be effectively without any fear of losing muscle.

    Your thoughts?

I usually recomend about 4-5 sessions a week with cardio. And yes, even if someone is starting cardio- just starting their prep- I am inclined to say use intervals, maybe 3 times a week and build up to 5 times a week.

I use, recommend and actually manufacturer a fat burner that is a strong stimulant. I believe in stimulant based fat burners. More then any other fat burning device, they increase and stimulate the sympathetic nervous system which, in turn, triggers fat breakdown. Can they increase cortisol? Yes they can. Is that a big negative? No. The trained body is far more succeessful at squelching excessive cortisol then the average stressed out overweight non exercising run of the mill type of guy. My take on cortisol; its actually somewhat beneficial in getting lean. More on that later.

Yes I did. But, I cant remember what he did. Actually I do remember. I would say, we took a lot of gambles all the way thru his diet and he trusted me to take enormous risks; which paid off. Funny thing is, that show Ronnie was very very good. Jay had paper skin which really did not show up well on, say pics in mags. I guess what I am saying, he looked (in person) even more impressive.
