Why does it matter if I can hold 315 with my bare hands vs straps? Mike said it best if you want to improve your grip improve your grip, if you want to work your back then do what ever it takes to work your back. This is a pretty senseless argument.

    not senseless at all.
i am a good example of straps always...for most of the time i have lifted with straps. this affected my grip to the point that i suffered from tendonitis. i started training grip and the tendonitis went away. i also relied less on straps.

straps are a tool to be used when necessary but not as a crutch that they have become for a lot of people.

Grip strength comes in handy for so many sports/skills/things in real life, so why not work it whenever? I have guy friends, bigger than me that use straps when deadlifting 315 for reps. Thats' just downright embarrassing IMO if you're that big but can't hold on to 315lbs. Strongmen to farmers walks with that weight (in EACH hand)
Statements like this is what I was referring to. Your case is something completely different and understandable Robert.

Yes they're different, but the whole point of the thread was exactly the same as what Robert said. I just threw those comments in there because I personally think it makes no sense at all to put on a ton of size, yet have no grip strength.

How do you know you wouldn't still do well in bodybuilding without them?

I've never seen or heard of someone losing a bodybuilding show because of small forearms or lack of grip strength. Strongmen do use straps from time to time but also do grip "specific" training as do powerlifters. I just really don't see what the big deal is, if your grip is weak train it vs if your back is small because you limit yourself to what your hands can hold? Makes no sense.

How come people want to train quads, chest, back whatever once a week. But seem to think you should train grip every workout.

No... How many days a week do you really train your grip? How many exercises really work your grip besides shrugs, deads, rows and weighted pullups?

I actually train grip on it's own day usually (but not always) when I train forearms. I use CofC grippers and other grip and pinch type exercises with plates and oversize handles as well as standard forearm exercises like wrist curls and reverse curls, roll ups etc etc as part of my weeks training plan.
The reason for the use of straps is not for 1 rep exercises as shown in the pic of franco or arnold. It's when my grip fails on the 4th rep of a heavy set and straps let me get out a few more reps to train the muscle group I'm targeting.

i started training grip before i ever competed. i did it to help with my job. which i should have pointed out in my post. it was purely theraputic. from there i realized i needed to stop using straps...

and i do see your point from the quoted posts.

No, I don't have a separate grip day. But having a stronger grip definitely makes all your other lifts go up. Just try squeezing the bar harder on pulldowns and watch how much easier the exercise becomes

s2h - and if you train DC style, DC has a FIXED number of reps (well, not exactly, but you go heavy enough so that its pretty hard for your grip to fail period).

Example - sets of 6 barbell rows at the end of day B. If the number of reps you do is FIXED, why would you wear straps if your grip is strong enough to handle the load? Only other bodypart you're even hitting the grip on is back width.. Just askin...

Squeezing the bar harder means more arm involvement which is the last thing I want when doing pulldowns or rows.

I would love to train with you because I think you have some big misconceptions about training and anatomy.
