Is deadlift necessary for developing physique?
Is the deadlift important for developing overall musculature?
Can a great bodybuilder physique be built without deadlifting?

If you back is a genetic strong point then probably not. If its not then you probably need it to add overall thickness to your back and as its a full body movement just like squats it has metabolic and hormonal benefits as well.

this is what i think ^
my back is my best body part by far and i only did deadlifts every 3-4 back workouts so maybe once a month...i also feel that heavy heavy reps is not needed...or atleast it is not for me...12 is perfect when i deadlift 12 reps for 3 sets balls to the wall

There's more than one way to hit the exact same area(s) that deads do.

I just don't think you will ever find a more complete movement than the deadlift. Add them in for a month and if you see improvements in your back then keep them if not then try something else. I saw a large improvement in my back thickness when I started them every week.

That's silly to say that any exercises is ESSENTIAL to developing a good physique. There are always things you can substitute certain exercises for.
I do think deads are the best back thickness exercises though

Lol I was thinking the exact same thing.
Is it absolutely fundamental? I can't really say.
All I can say is that I have a slightly herniated disk in my lower back and I'm pretty much deadlifting every day so there you have it.
For the record, the herniated disk came from squatting in a smith machine NOT from deadlifting.

i find rack deads to be much more benefical for back development...true deads done with correct form will lead to overall development throughout your entire lower region from back to tie ins and hams...
