Default Investing in bodybuilding and fitness businesses? $$$

Im thinking about doing something with some money i have saved up and stocks were an easy choice but its seems so boring and i want something more fun and involved with what i know and love.

Im looking for ideas and people who have money invested into things like Smoothie shops that offer bodybuilding/energy/recovery/mass building shakes etc...Vitamin shops or new supplement companies looking for investors, Gyms/ personal training studios, even websites like simplyshredded.com if they need investors.

What do you think? Foolish or worth the risk and fun? I saw jason huh's shake shop on MD and never understood why i havent tried anything out like that yet or even invested into someones else's business to help out and profit from it.

I think the smoothie shops can make it in the right locations, but I dont think the mid-west is the right location. Maybe a cookie/cupcake/ice cream store here in the midwest would do well. as long as it also had one of those eat five pounds of ice cream and cake and get a t-shirt and you pic on the wall!

I'd like to know more about this as well. Did Jason go through any formal business planning process before opening it. Any details shared would be much appreciated.

Haha i know right. Its like Michigan and the surrounding states are the poster states for diabetes stress and unhealthy eating.

I'm in Texas....one of the fattest and WE DO GREAT!!! I will say that you need the perfect location.
You most likely will want a franchise of some sort. Go with something decently well known or something with a well developed business strategy. I've seen a lot of nutrition stores/smoothie shops come and go. The ones that go operate like a mom and pop and not like a real business, with policies and procedures.

You could do your own, but I'd recommend working in the field you are looking at so you understand the pitfalls and what not.

Feel free to PM me and I can make some recommendations. I don't really want to sound like an add for some of the better franchises out there.

Just as a note, I did my store(s) on my own, but I was also on the inside of GNC franchising for 7 years. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GNC FRANCHISING.

I guess you have never been to Texas, half of the people here are obese, and it is easily noticeable.

If you want to turn a big pile of money into a little pile of money, go for it!

Good money in fitness is made one of two ways...

"As seen on TV" fitness devices. This how Jake Steinfeld made his millions. Great investment.

"Magic Pills" OTC weight loss. Not GNC OTC, regular drugstore OTC. MegaGreen Tea comes to mind. No special formula needed. Just an angle.

Of course you can make decent money opening a gym or sup store, but its not the best ROI for your buck. If you want to make real money find some good IPOs or energy stocks. Ive had a few energy stocks triple over the past year. If I would have invested more I'd be that much richer.

A good rule of thumb is not to mix your passion with your profits. Passion can influence business decisions in a negative way. Its like not betting on your favorite team.

Yeah why go with stocks that on average net you a 10% return.

FYI if you want to be risky with you money just go to the casino and put it all on black #8

First off think of the particular demographic of individuals you're appealing to. Is there a demand and need for smoothie or supplement store where you live?

All these businesses, especially gyms are horrible idea's for investing your money. The ROI on gyms is absolute shit!

I was thinking of a supplement website. I don't want to go into it here because it's a pretty cool idea and not your typical supplement site but I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't understand how so many supplement sites can exist and all do well though. I would think the cheapest one would take the majority of the business and leave everyone else off to the side.

Yes. Just like any business - you have to know your area, or what area would work for the business you want. Also, cost of doing business in that area - taxes, rents, insurance, etc. I've written multiple business plans and it made just about every business idea that sounded like a slam dunk to be absolute shit after it was put on paper.

Yes. Gyms are horrible. The only thing that would work would be a PT Studio with 1-3 trainers that had an already established group of clients (very busy trainers) in a situation where the lease was low or negligible.

The best deal I've found to work is office buildings. Many A level commercial real estate buildings have gym facilities. Many of these facilities are VERY nice. Fully equipped. I was SO VERY CLOSE to negotiating a "lease agreement" where we would maintain the facility (wash towels, vacuum, clean the locker rooms) in exchange for free rent - also, building tenants could use the gym and we would give them 1/2 off training sessions if they wanted. It fell through because one of the partners (out of three) thought it was a silly idea. Go figure - it's a DREAM IDEA if you ask me!

Drop shipping through distributors. That's how DiscountSupplements does it. - through Europa. You can do the same thing with Dog Food, or other such items. You can actually make a hell of a lot of money on Ebay selling stuff like dog food - when people bid on and win - the order goes directly to the drop shipper who then ships out the goods and every two weeks you get a check. Yes, I do it - but not with dog food... although, I know someone who does it with dog food... I do it with something a bit more... fun? lol

If you are doing your own site - you'll have to think about how you are going to get it "out there" - get buyers to come and what you can offer people that the other websites can't... unfortunately, all people care about are who has the lowest prices and who can get the supplements to them the FASTEST.

That's why I like the Ebay option... free advertising.
