Another Ric, Drasin, showed me his scars....same injury, both legs doin the same damn thing. Except for his knees which got pfucked up from wrestlin shows, he is doing great. Wont hold you back either. The main thing...enjoy the moment. Only competiors know the rush.

Especially once you hit 40 and older. We've pounded our bodies for years with heavy weights and our joints are shot, backs f***cked up, you name it. BUT...we don't quit, we train through the pain (when we can) and adapt and move on!!! It's an addiction.....and I'm proud of it.

OK I'm new here. How did you tear your quads? I competed 8 months after tearing my groin along with a lower abdominal muscle while squatting. It definitely hurt my appearance but wasn't a deal breaker.

Exactly. I trained almost injury free for 28 years then I tore my rotator cuff on a heavy(for me) bench press. Surgery was going to lay me up for 9 months so I rehabbed it myself over that same time period. It's not as strong as it used to be but that the way I went. Then about this time last year I was on my 4th set of squats and on that set's third rep with 295 pounds I severely tore my right groin and lower abdominal muscle. It felt exactly like someone had shot me with a gun. I was able to get the weight racked but it hurt so badly I almost threw up. I was black and blue from my waist to my upper calf. Yes, that too. It took about 8 months before I could train my legs with any purpose. Now, I have to admit, I'm a little hesitant to let it all out but on I go.

Well, unknown to my naysayers and comedians, I actually had big legs in my 20's and early 30's. In fact, they were my best body part. I used to squat 500lbs ass to the floor then. I had a 14 yr layoff from 33 to 47 and when I came back to training, I discovered that I had athletic arthritis in both knees and have not been able to squat since. The pain was prohibitive. I slowly worked up to 1000lb leg presses and endured pain from those for 6 years. But you can't build an outside sweep without squats.

Arthritis causes the tendons to become glassy and inflexible. I was doing 800lb leg presses when the tendons finally snapped. As much shit as I get about my thighs, I trained them as hard as I could with the pain I endured and have just lived with the deficit.

Since the surgery to reattach, the Dr. Has said that since he was able to eliminate a lot of the arthritis, the pain should ne minimal to non-existent after complete healing (1 yr). So far, no pain at half strength training. Hopefully, I'll be able to squat again by Spring and get the shape back I had in my 20's.

Let's see how I do in 9 days....

Good for you ... Everyone who steps on stage is a winner in my book. Getting a trophy is nice but the real reward is knowing that you did your best with what you had to work with. Enjoy the stage!

I'm guessing that you will do very well. Master 50+ leg quality is traditionally less than sterling. Upper body and overall conditioning seems more important. My legs were and still may be my best body part but I have to endure a lot of pain to train them correctly. Some leg days I go in and wonder how I'm going to get my Kono bands on much less squat heavy. I trained for a while in the mid 80's at Steve Davis Gym in Van Nuys. Cory Everson trained about the same time that I was in most days and I've had several leg workouts with her. I came the closest I've ever come to blacking out doing my 8th rep sitting on my calves at 455 with her urging me on. I was really done at 6 but it was Cory Everson. That was a cool place to train. Besides Cory there was Al Beckels, Tony Pierson, Steve Davis, Ally Sheedy, Jeff Goldblum and others.
