Default Glucosamine and chondroitin are effective as placebo.

Well, people swear by this stuff. But, the following study suggests the shit sucks.

    Abstract
Objective To determine the effect of glucosamine, chondroitin, or the two in combination on joint pain and on radiological progression
of disease in osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.

Design Network meta-analysis. Direct comparisons within trials were combined with indirect evidence from other trials by using a
Bayesian model that allowed the synthesis of multiple time points.

Main outcome measure Pain intensity. Secondary outcome was change in minimal width of joint space. The minimal clinically important difference between preparations and placebo was prespecified at −0.9 cm on a 10 cm visual analogue scale.

Data sources Electronic databases and conference proceedings from inception to June 2009, expert contact, relevant websites.

Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Large scale randomised controlled trials in more than 200 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip that compared glucosamine,
chondroitin, or their combination with placebo or head to head.

Results 10 trials in 3803 patients were included. On a 10 cm visual analogue scale the overall difference in pain intensity compared with placebo was −0.4 cm (95% credible interval −0.7 to −0.1 cm) for glucosamine, −0.3 cm (−0.7 to 0.0 cm) for chondroitin, and −0.5 cm (−0.9 to 0.0 cm) for the combination. For none of the estimates did the 95% credible intervals cross the boundary of the minimal clinically important difference. Industry independent trials showed smaller effects than commercially funded trials (P=0.02 for interaction). The differences in changes in minimal width of joint space were all minute, with 95% credible intervals overlapping zero.

Conclusions Compared with placebo, glucosamine, chondroitin, and their combination do not reduce joint pain or have an impact on narrowing
of joint space. Health authorities and health insurers should not cover the costs of these preparations, and new prescriptions
to patients who have not received treatment should be discouraged.

Well, they did use puny doses. You need tons of this stuff for those people to work. Especially considering that folks eating wheat et al(read: everyone) were basically counteracting the glucisamine supplementation. The lectin Wheat Germ Agglutanin binds to the glucosamine moiety to enter the blood stream and cause an autoimmune reaction and antibody production for tissue glucosamine. This is basically how rheumatoid arthritis gets going in the first place.

They'd need to use about 8000-10'000mg per day to counteract it. Lot's of conflicts in the study as well.

But I don't use it so don't really care...

I'm curious of the efficacy of glucosamine and dosage.

Any references for what you suggested including dose response effects of glucosamine?

I have never come across a legitimate study which vindicates this stuff. However, I think a better strategies for pressing joint and connective tissues is Mega- Dosing Omega 3 Fish oils.

Good idea, but not a viable option if you're still single, unless you're dating a mermaid..

    Lol.

You guys are lucky too b/c you can have fish oils. I'm vegetarian, so I make sure to cook my soy patties in the microwave and then put olive oil on them. I also take macadamia, sesame, flax, and almond oil throughout the day.

If I took any more oil, I could give the Synthol guys a run for their money

(Sesame seed has 6gPoly, 6g Mono -- which is awesome -- and Dave is right Macadamia nut oil taste lovely )

    Lovely sounds so g*y, lol.
    It's lovely,

What about Glucosamine and chondroitin with MSM? Is that combo no good? Personally, it has worked for me.

hmm... almost out of glucosamine, not sure if I will buy more. The worst part is, how the hell can you tell if they're actually working / helping ? I don't have joint pain so I have no way to gauge if they are doing their job. :P

For starters, who ordered the research? Usually, you get the result you pay for if you know what I mean.

I'm not saying it works but gimme a billion bucks and I'll find a lab that can prove that creatine is deadly.
