    Default Liver tests

I recently had bloodwork done as part of a yearly phycial and my AST levels were 101 and ALT levels 105. The bloodwork was done 4 days after i did a BB show in which i was using quite a bit of juice including 3 different orals. are these numbers something to be overly concerned with or not considering the timing of the blookwork?
    thanks

Obviously Dr. Nathan's word means more than mine, but to be honest, those numbers aren't nearly as bad as I would have expected considering you were on 3 orals. I've seen liver enzymes look FAR worse for people on otc steroids/prohormones.

Those numbers should come back to normal I'd guess.

Default Numbers are not worrisome now.

Oral anabolics are especially toxic on the liver. Your values are up, but will probably be within normal range if you check them in 8-12 weeks.

Well I just got mine back from my annual physical.

Last year, my AST (SGOT) was 58 and ALT(SGPT) was 90

This year, they were 103 and 230 respectively.

The bloodwork was taken again this week and they were still higher,
but I've not gotten them yet. My doctor is telling me to see a specialist.

I've NEVER juiced, nor been on any cycle.

I've basically followed the same dietary plan since last year. The only thing I've done within the last few months was change my training style to H.I.T.

I'll be making that appointment next week. Any recommendations for specialists in Central, NJ?

I don't know Docs on your area. Ask your primary doc for a liver specialist he trusts.

Stop lifting weights. Hard training has been proven in clinical trials to raise liver enzymes giving false numbers. Take 7-10 days off lifting and stay well hydrated before your next labs.

    And NO alcohol.

Just had my initial appt. with my Gastroenterologist.

I have to get some additional bloodwork done, but off hand, he doesn't think there's a major problem with me. But the tests will show.

Thanks for the advice though, and FYI, I've NEVER drank, nor have done any drugs.

** interesting also, out of all of the questions he asked me in regards to my overall health and lifestyle, he NEVER asked me whether
I worked out or not, or how intense are my workouts. If what heavyiron said about lifting weights and liver enzyme levels is true, then again, it's another example to me of the disconnect between general health, diet, and exercise in the health community

Yes, heavy exercise does elevate liver function tests. Check out this reference: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17764474

Wow, this is great information. I think I may forward this to my physician.
She's a bodybuilder also, so I would have thought she would have considered
this prior to sending me to specialist. She only considered weightlifting in regards
to my kidney tests, which were slightly high, but she again waived it off because I worked out, and because I'm African-American.

I could have as heavyiron said, taken 7-10 days off, then went again for AST, ALT bloodwork, and if it were still high then, then it would have been good to go to a specialist.

I have a script to get the bloodwork done, along with a followup appointment about a month from now. I think I will take that 7-10 days off as heavyiron suggested, then get it done. I may need to push back my follow up exam, as they told me it may take a couple of weeks before the results are in.

Wow, I did not know that heavy exercise does elevate your liver tests. Is it really necessary to take 7 to 10 days off from the gym for clear results?

Default Working out and test results

No, patients don't usually stop working out before a test. Possibly work out less intensely a couple of days before the test and don't workout on the day of the blood test until after it is drawn.

We get too much out of just going to the gym and keeping on schedule that it would be unproductive to stop working out before a test.

Thanks Dr. Nathan, I'll keep that in mind. I may do a less intense session or two, with a couple of days of fat burning. I've been going hard the last 7-8 weeks, so a couple extra days rest couldn't hurt I would think.

CONCLUSION: The liver function parameters, AST and ALT, were significantly increased for at least 7 days after the exercise. In addition, LD and, in particular, CK and myoglobin showed highly elevated levels. These findings highlight the importance of imposing restrictions on weightlifting prior to and during clinical studies. Intensive muscular exercise, e.g. weightlifting, should also be considered as a cause of asymptomatic elevations of liver function tests in daily clinical practice.
