daughter in ICU and figured who better to ask a chem question!!
hey guys, i havent been on here at all the last wk, my daughter has been in pediatric icu since sunday night-lungs infected with Pseudumonas A. (pneumonia pretty bad) and she has asthma- all started as a runny nose Saturday night.
To my question, they have her incubated, so shes unconcious and on a ventilator, feeding tube and all of that. they have her on about 5 different iv drugs all on continuous pumps.
a paralytic-cistracuriom(something to that effect, will check spelling in a few minutes)
sedatives-midazolam, and ketamine
Bronchidialators-Albuterol, Terbutaline
Shes been running a constant fever since we got into the ped icu (101-103 give or take, they only measure in celcius so have had to use phone to convert units) but not before, and shes been having tremors and really high heart rates-up to 220 bpm but usually staying between 170-190bpm. my question is this, nurse has blamed the fever, high heart rate, and tremors on the Bronchi-dialators Albuterol and Terbutaline.
Does that sound right to you guys?? I know these drugs arent as familiar to most but i figured if anyone could give me an intelligent answer itd be someone on here. I havent been very satisfied with nurses answers and explanations no matter how many questions it seems my fiance and I ask.
Any insight or help would be much appreciated.
Thank you, shorty

I am a respiratory therapist....and no, albuterol would not cause a heart rate that high by itself. Terbutaline and albuterol together, would cause a slight increase in heart rate, but not as high as your daughter's heart rate. How old is she? Very young children have much higher normal heart rates than an adult. Average for an adult is anywhere from 60-100bpm. An infant is normally anywhere from 100-160bpm. Children range in between an adult and infant. Her high heart rate is most likely more to do with her fever, but the bronchodilators may have some effect on it as well. Why not try Xopenex instead of albuterol? Much fewer side effects. I hope she gets better soon! Please ask your daughters respiratory therapist these questions.....they are the people that are taking care of the ventilator, and specialize in the pulmonary systems. They will be able to answer your questions about these drugs and alternatives to them.

fact that you guys all took the time to comment here means alot.
my daughter is 18months and my youngest of 2 kids. this is the 2nd time shes been hospitalized under similar circumstances, but this is by far the most serious. Reason I asked is I felt the nurses who are rotated in and out were just giving me answers to try to make me happy, not neccesarily the right answers. it just didnt seem right to blame all those things on the medications, and I feel alot better knowing whats going on whether good or bad.
I talkd to attila and he had some good input, and def helped make sense of some things. Also jsut want to say that the guy(attila) was on his phone and I believe out of town but was still able to answer my pm within 30minutes. that is bad ass. i havent been a member of another board where mods where so quick to help and get back to you. If you see this attila, thanks again bro.
quick update, we saw first tangible sign of progress since last sunday late tonight. I was standing by her bed and holding her hand, and she squeezed my fingers. thats not much but was enough to lift my spirits and my fiance's as well. they were also able to lower the oxygen concentration on her ventilator settings which is heading in the right direction also.
Ill post any updates on this same thread. Again thank you to all my iron brothers out there for the support and comments.
cheers, shorty
