Is Protein Powder Overrated?
http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-...,4679650.story
This Los Angeles Times article suggests it is time to rethink protein powder based on actual studies, rather than supplement company claims. I linked it rather than report because the follow-up discussion is interesting as well.

i thought it was a shitty article not worth reading, 136 grams of protein? seriously... i wouldnt call protein powder over rated it does what i need it to do and thats provide me with protein when i dont have time to eat, simple.
"Since Clark favors food over supplementation, let's examine how realistic that is for the ambitious case of an omnivorous athlete looking to maximize his muscular gains. If he weighs 85 kilograms (187 pounds), the Cal State researchers would have him consuming 136 grams of protein each day.
When you consider that a modest 6-ounce chicken breast and a 16-ounce glass of milk would get him more than halfway there, it seems like our workout warrior can get all of his protein needs met via real and unprocessed food without too much difficulty."
one of the comments, probably a fat slob:
"Okay, protein powder questions are now answered! Now let's have a study on whatever it is that the body builders - especially those in the pictures - use to make themselves various hues more suited to pumpkins. And frankly, I don't care about whatever chemicals they use. Just curious as to the weird, I'm guessing mob-mentality or lemming mindset where so many of them have decided that it somehow looks good, possibly because so many others have inexplicably embraced the concept of turning themselves orange or gold. They look ridiculous. I mean, yes, we all agree their overdone vascularity looks disgusting but painting yourself up to look like a Halloween gourd on steroids just looks creepy.

I do think it's a little overrated.
I would much rather get my protein in by eating chicken, steak, fish......ect.
However, we aren't all blessed with jobs that let us eat every 2-3 hours, so protein powders do come in handy.

I don't think it's over rated. I think it is what it is. It's not magic though and I replace it with a nice steak or chicken breast when I can. Its main benefit is it's convenient.

I don't particularly think any processed foods are good for you but in terms of "grams of protein per dollar spent" its actually pretty reasonable.

they don't have any "magic" properties, they just help to provide quick, easy nutrition throughout the day

Protein is only chains of amino acids. Does not matter how you get them.

I dont think anyone ever claimed shakes to be superior to whole food. but there are reasons why people do use it.
1. convenient
2. cheaper than a meal.
3. Leaner.
I wouldn't say it's overrated simply because you CAN make all your gains without using, because I think everyone's known that from the start. Of course you can still get in your protein from steak, chicken, eggs and fish. But it takes 20-30 minutes to cook those, and 30 seconds to make a shake. It only makes sense why people use protein powders.
That being said I do know some companies that give the rest a bad name, saying you will gain 8lbs of muscle in 14 days from using their protein powder. Which is why I stick with a company that doesn't bullshit, like Species or trueprotein.

Its only over rated if you believe the ads in the magazines that show Ronnie Coleman or Jay drinking a protein shake and acting like that's what gives them their edge! If you believe it for what it actually is (a way to help you get all your protein in daily)then it's not over-rated. You could say that about any supplement. A fat-burner is over-rated if you expect to eat doughnuts and get shredded. But if you understand that it's to give you a little extra kick then it does it's job!

I keep a jug of nitro tech hardcore on top of my fridge at all times, just so when women stop over they know I'm serious about my training.

More Humapro propaganda!
The author is taking an extremely oversimplified view of the topic.

I take two strong protein shakes to work, and that effectively kills my hunger and gives me the BCAA's for recovery.... and the other guys eat a carb-loaded sandwich and a bag of chips and a candy bar. Who's better off?? That's my two cents.
