I got into a discussion about the effects of aspartame on the body and found the following links:

- I drink a diet drink with a sweet taste[/*]
- Insulin response is triggered.[/*]
- The body is now inhibited from breaking down fat given this response.[/*]
What does our body do for energy at this point? If its having a hard time breaking down fat for energy and I have no carbs in my body... is it protein? muscle?
Please let me know if I'm off base here on anything. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Being a type 1 Diabetic I have noticed some strange effects while drinking CERTAIN flavors of crystal light. Extremely high blood sugar levels after drinking excessive amounts!

I think aspartame is horrible.. but, I dont think it generates insulin spikes. I used to drink lots of diet soda while on keto and leaning out and it never affected me like that. It does however stimulate appetite which may account for the weight gain.

Palumbo has said many times that you can drink as much diet pop as you want while on keto, as long as it truely calorie free. He has said hi self that he use to drink up to 2 -2 liters of it a day. Its not going to keep you from going into ketosis, or from burning fat. In fact if im not mistaken an insulin spike with no carbohydrates present in the body will only put you into ketosis faster.

The sources the OP cites state it could be due to a "faulty insulin response". This could then be a genetic issue in which case it would only apply for certain individuals. Do you happen to have a contradictory source I could take a look at that you based this on?
What are you referring to by "It" when you say "It does however stimulate appetite"? Are you referring to diet soda? Do you have a source for this? In any case, if you are following a keto diet, eating and at regular intervals, and you get a stimulated appetite, I know I personally would not deviate from my plan regardless of how I was feeling at any given moment. Unless you are implying simply feeling hungry makes you fat without eating more?

All my evidence is anecdotal. Artificial sweetener did not have any effect on blood sugar or insulin in my body. IT refers to artificial sweetener, or any sweetener for that matter. I use lots of pure stevia and it makes me hungry as hell. So much so I am considering marketing it to restaurants to include in appetizers and mixed drinks to increase ordering volume.

its the supposed appetite increase that accounts for the weight gain. i've never had a problem on keto and drinking diet soda, and I drink alot of it. It may not be good but it gets me through it. And the fat loss has not seemed to be affected.

By the looks of it there are 0.3g of maltodextrin in the drink: http://caloriecount.about.com/calori...ree-low-i14377
Regardless of being on a keto diet, maltodextrin being a complex carb, I'm not really sure how I follow the logic of it causing a blood sugar spike especially in such a small quantity.
I believe machine was trying to provide some anecdotal evidence that certain flavors caused spikes whereas others did not. That is, flavor was the only variable. This seems to support the sources in the OP that in certain individuals an insulin response can occur.
I am definitely looking forward to reading Jeremy24's reply regarding insulin and no carbs in the body.

First of all, he is type 1 dibetic...second, some flavors of Crystal Light have a little more than .5g of malto per gram of CL mix, and 1 gram is not very much..each tub contains 16g of CL mix.....so if you use 1 tub to flavor your drink...thats at least 8 carbohydrates...and some people drink tub after tub. During ketosis, you shouldn't exceed 5-8 carbohydrates per meal, let alone taking in an extra 8 or 9 carbohydrates from a drink.
Third, yes, maltodextrin is called a "complex carbohydrate" but it can raise insulin levels rapidly.
