Charles Gaines described bodybuilding as athletic preparation for aesthetic competition; I think that sums it up as a sport perfectly.

Some bodybuilders ara athletes, and some athletes look like bodybuilders.
Also there are bodybuilders who have to take a deep breath after speaking 5 words or have trouble getting dressed or have a hard time going up some stairs, how is that athletic?

I always looked at it as more of an art-form related slightly to athletics.

Athlete - a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.
Bodybuilders are trained in exercises, to take it at its basest most literal point. The exercises involved involve Strength, Stamina, and, to a lesser extent, agility.
Bodybuilding is a sport, imo, and it requires physical skill; down to Genetics, posing, muscle control, exercise form, etc. I think there are enough qualifications of the aforementioned to qualify bodybuilders as athletes.

If your going to use the bodybuilding is a sport (which i agree that it is) argument, how would you respond to this...
Golf is a sport and some people even consider bowling a sport. Are they athletes? Definately not ALL, maybe a few. I definately wouldnt consider John Daly an athlete lol
