I've used them and found they bother my knees, I just stick with no more than 3 plates and go deep with high volume reps. I have never had any trouble with my knees and I 5 years from being 50. What I have learned, is many power lifters hips go out, so keep that in mind if you want to try doing heavy squats. Volume builds your legs if you go heavy enough and do enough sets you don't need to load up 5-6 plates on each side and tear up everything. If you want to have longevity in your training, do it smart. Be careful on leg presses too, people tend to roll their hips and this is how they get injured. If you can't go below parallel with a squat it's too heavy, if you can't get your knees close to your chest with on a leg sled without great control and force the weight back up with power again, too heavy. Bodybuilding is about form, control and recruiting muscle fiber, this can be done without damaging your joints and tendons. Do forced reps if you want to stress the muscle to build using a spotter, concentrate on proper contraction during your reps. I also like to adjust my foot placement during squats doing Sumo squats etc. on a Smith machine, you can go a little heavier than on a traditional rack because to the stabilization allowing one to isolate different parts of your leg. Don't get me wrong squats are king for overall recruitment of leg mass and help with test surge in the body, but use supplemental exercises too if your seeking to build up mass in your legs. Where people get hung up is they look at a 280lb guy squatting 500+ pounds, that's relative to his size, any I can bet he does not do that more than once a month.

Don't know where people get this misconception that wraps and belts make weight lighter or easier all they do is precautionary measures to ensure safety. When you squat 400+ nothing makes that weight any easier and as far as stability knee wraps provide its good when your bar is bouncing and bending.

I agree with your post people do get caught up with the impression that a belt or wrap will increase your strength, what they do is help stabilize your back and your knees. But with that comes some other issues, with a belt you get increased stress on your organs and higher blood pressure, and with your knees added stress from compression . I use a belt however but only on very heavy lifts and when I row. When doing power lifting, I do agree about the wraps and the belts if that is part of someone's training program.

Yeah same here I use them occasionally only when going heavy. I do see guys however using them when doing chest like pec deck just wearing it as a fashion statement lmao. But I think when you first start lifting and your still young and not as strong these thing aren't necessarily a necessity only belt when dead lifting. And this is a perfect time to strengthen ligaments and tendons for heavier poundage

I have never used wraps and truth is I am not a good squatter.
I know it doesn't answer the question, but I have been using TK Knee Bands which have really helped my felt knee. Doctors say nothing is wrong with it, but it is to the point where it hurts, feels swollen, and I limp around sometimes. Anyway, they really keep the area warm.

If you do use knee wraps, what brand of wrap do you recommend?

I have two herniated discs in my lower back so going heavy on leg day has never been easy..recently started to build some solid strength and go up in weight..after getting pain on the right knee i was turned onto TK knee bands by a fellow forum member..although they slide around once your sweaty if you dont mind readjusting them a couple time they really are a great preventative tool and helped me a great deal so far... they dont make the weight lighter..they simply help promote blood flow and protect from injury etc... definately worth something to look into! oh and just so everyone know they are a bitch to put on.. you have been warned ahahah

I use Inzer Advance Designs Iron Wraps Z. They are much sturdier than the wraps that you get at your local sporting goods store. They also hold up well to machine washing.
