Default 14 year old weight problem

My daughter has gained 30lbs in the last three months. She stopped menstrating in january. Her eating habits did not really change and she has been pretty active as well. Could she have a thyroid problem or could it just be our genetics? (Im 6-3 315lbs) What supplements would be safe for her to consume? We are about to start our diet and cardio plan to lose it and any help would be appreciated!

at such a young age i would not worry about supplements. nutrition and cardio is more important. she can still take multivitamins and fish oils, etc.

if you are that concerned you can go get blood work done and check her blood work. but first i would check what she is eating when you are not around.

now you said she stopped menstrating ...and she is gaining weight ....i know no father wants to think of the possibility but could she be pregnant? for your sake i hope not.

and if the menstrual cycle is completely absent....and there is a thyroid problem...in most cases it would be hyperthyroidism, which would cause weight loss.

Yea the amenorrhea is what scares me at that age.. and holy F - 30 lb in 3 months? Get the girl to a doctor and get some blood work done. No need to panic her on it, but dramatic changes like that would normally be driven by some sort of sudden change in stress level or something. The weight gain I might give to hitting puberty w/ a vengeance, but instead you're saying her period stopped. Has it been consistent for a long period of time already? Or is it a recent thing and maybe she just simply doesn't have a regular period? Or has it been stopped for a long time?

Either way, that sort of dramatic change IMO says something's up. If its not behavioral, then I'd go get it checked. Just leaving it isn't going to make things better and at that age, looking to the use of supplements is not the right way to go. Her body is responding to something, but the results don't look normal for just assuming its puberty.

i suggest you take her to the doctor and let them determine if she has medical issues. i would also suggest not giving sups to kids without running it past the doctors first. a DO isnt bad for this.

Sounds like she is pregnant. Doctors appointment should figure everything out though... Could be a thyroid problem though too.

I don't have anything else to add to what's already been posted, I just wanted to wish you luck! It's tough being a teenage girl and dealing with these kind of things.
I lost my period for about 6 months when I was 16. No weight gain or loss, but the doctors could not figure out why and refused to believe that I was not pregnant. I was subject to pregnancy test after pregnancy test even though I wasn't sexually active at the time. It was very hard on me, not to mention my relationship with my doc and parents who were all convinced I was lying to them about being pregnant. They finally mega dosed me with hormones and kept me on BC, but I had regular periods again. I stayed on the BC for a year or so, then dropped it and have never had a problem since.

Moral of the story: Be patient, don't make assumptions, and the teenage body can do some crazy hormone things with no explanation! I hope all is OK with your daughter.

Me neither. Thats why he needs to take her to a doctor and get this sorted out. If she was pregnant, there would be signs that will be detected in minutes. He said he already has made an appointment though, so it should get sorted out.

UPDATE: Went to doc and he said that she was overweight and that she must start getting more exersize and that she is NOT pregnant. really didn't find any significant thing with bloodwork. He said the missed and scattered periods are a common thing with young ladies. Thanks for all your help and wish me luck with our new diet!

her period may be out of whack bc she is over weight. estrogen lives in fat cells. the more fat cells= more estrogen. i wouldnt put her on a structured diet like we are used to at her age but get her more active and change her food choices. fruits veggies ditch the fast food and crap snacky stuff. and pack her lunch to school.
