Anorexic to Athlete
Anorexic to AthleteBy: M.E. Anders
She glimpsed herself in the mirror with a sense of despondency at the reflection. Ribs poking through taut skin emphasized the onset of starvation. Distorted self-image overshadowed all sensibility. Mumbling to herself, "If you could just get that eating under control!"
Nominated as the beauty queen of her senior class, who would suspect that Mindi silently struggled with a mild eating disorder? Late onset of menses was a clue to her parents that some underlying issue was taunting their prepubescent-looking daughter at age seventeen. Her mere 88 pounds at 5'3" clued them into her obsession with the stashed magazines of rail-thin models beneath her bed. Literally posing before every mirror to ensure one invisible roll of fat did not show through her blouse, Mindi fell prey to symptoms of anorexia nervosa.

That's a great story, usually anorexia kills it's victims, i'm glad you started taking care of your health, let alone start competing. AWESOME.

I like to always say, if you workout on the regular, there's no way you'll become anorexic lol.

I personally think its unnecessary and there is no reason to
take that to that extreme its also really gross, but at
the same time this problem kills alot of young girls
who think there fat, and dont really know the
truth about what people think of them its said
and i hope this dosn't happen to anyone even though it does.
NO ONE SHOULD GET LIKE THAT!

I do wish that more girls were taught a healthy self-image...that's what we competitors strive to do for others.

Yes true but not everyones raised healthy and alot of other things.. Its alot easier to be heavy and unhealthy then to be fit and healthy thats why alot of people dont's choose bodybuilding or fittness, but the things we do and what we can show people may inspire them to do the right things for themselves.... All we can be is motivation and knowledge to people the person themselves want to do it you cant force them thats why i like bodybuilding, because you choose to do it.

I agree that bodybuilding and physique sports are one of many methods that we can utilize to reach the unhealthy population. True - bodybuilding takes motivation, patience, and endurance (PAIN)...not everyone is willing to make the necessary "sacrifices" to achieve physique dreams.

Great article! Sure wish stuff like this had been around when I had starved/binged myself to a skeleton back in the 80s! Glad I can be a solid example to my own kids regarding proper nutrition and exercise now that I know better.

LOL! My 4 y.o. son has his dad's physique. Dad's got a definite Y shape frame and if he packs on muscle like his dad, it could happen. However, as intellectual as he is plus being as selective as he is with food, I'm not so sure though. Guessing math genius at M.I.T. over bber.
Actually, I'd hedge my bets on my 2-y.o. daughter. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she ends up an IFBB pro. She already has the disposition of a pro athlete, plays hard, eats meats & veggies like a champ, doesn't know the meaning of pain, outgoing, loves the spotlight, takes no crap from anyone, and very innovative.Training Journal:

I love that your writing tells a story of your past and you are not afraid to let others see it. Many of us hide from our pasts and neglect to fully see who we really are. Being happy means being happy on the inside and outside. Until I was really happy on the inside, I had NO CLUE what I wanted my body on the outside to look like......

Truly an amazing transformation story... congratulations on your victory over your eating disorder and building an enviable physique!!
