Off Season Support Thread: Post pics and your program to get feedback
Ok, so i've recently discovered this forum and I've been checking
out a lot of old posts, pics and vids. I see a lot of guys getting what i think
is fat and bloated in the off season.
I'm no competitor (yet) and i'm just wondering is it
really necessary to become a smooth, bloated, fat ass.
Just to put on some size?
if i want to "look good" and still put on size, is that possible?
I've never really done an off season before.
i want to still really have abs, not the old, "oh i still have abs", but i'm
really a fat piece of crap.
can i bulk and stay under 10% BF?

BC, Farah always talks about how "if you can't see your abs, then you're fat" he keeps his clients pretty lean during the offseason, and they seem to grow pretty well, plus you're already a big dude as it is, so you'll be able to grow while staying a little leaner

I say take the route that you are most comfortable in your skin but the fastest route will mean calories are maxed out for your genetics, which you will have to find. And that will result in some fat gain, but there is no need to lose your abs.
Ive attached where Im keeping myself this offseason at about 196....maybe Im fat to you but Im okay with this look.

I was welter at 163 one week out from nats. didnt pull water and carbed up 500 carbs taht day before and ate 200 before weigh in that morning lol and 1 gallon water too.
A week later I barely made weight for Nationals, it was not a fun day of no eating or drinking until 7pm weigh in but made it at 155.
So at 196 Im anywhere from 35 to 40 lbs up. Im trying to move to middles. Right now I think I have enough to be shredded at 170 which would make me a local level middle and a national level welter as Id do the same thing to make weight again then fill out.

I do not think that there is any reason to exceed 10 % bf in the offseason.

Below are 2 pics of me. 1 is when I was around 170 one week before last year's Masters Nats...which I went in at 164 as a welter. The other is a few months ago of me in the low 190s offseason. I worked with George Farah this past year and this is exactly the condition he wanted me to stay the offseason. Still have to see abs all year round IMO.

anymore its 190 Id have to drop cals to fall to 180. Id be much leaner at 180 I have a shot at 178 morning weight on my facebook for halloween and I was damn lean better shape than 90% local level competitors these days, so 190 is about my walking around maintainable weight. In those pics I was pushing 4200 cals.

Thats killer kevin, though I personally could not maintain that and still grow. Id be having cardio in daily at at least 30 mins or eating sub 3000 cals and with my metab I wouldnt progress.
Everyone is diff. Id say Kevin here has well above average genetics which needs to be taken into account too. As with all things bodybuilding, genetics will dictate a lot.
He looks bad-ass in both shots.

SS, Are you doing the Nationals this fall as a welter? I think I'm gonna do them too this fall don't know if I'll be a welter or middle...we'll see if this 44 year old body can put on a few more pounds of muscle before I begin to lean out. Right now, I'm about 197, kinda like you probably around 170 stage ready.

I dont get over 8% ever. Infact I was tested at 7% recently. The one year I forced myself to be a fat ass was the dumbest thing I ever did and it was the toughest diet to get in shape. Its not necessary to carry around a bunch of fat.

No, I'm going to give it one more year. After last year I was pealed head to toe but overlooked (even admittedly so by two judges afterwards) because I need to move up a class or two. I figure why not give a full 1.5 years since 2010 nationals. So Ill keep trying to grow here until April 2012 then diet for Jr. Nats. Then stay lean thereafter and get ready for Nationals much like I did this year. At 5'6" i feel I should make a strong push for middles but hey if this body wont go there with a sensible plan Ill compete as a welter in 2012.
Good Luck I really like your physique man and think you will do really well.
