MAAC Champions! Canisius Defeats Fairfield to Win Program’s First Title

New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Canisius College women's lacrosse team never trailed en route to winning its first MAAC Championship against top-seeded Fairfield, 13-8, on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs extend their best season in school history, improving to 14-5 during the 2011 campaign, and the team now advances to face Atlantic 10 Champion Massachusetts next weekend in a NCAA Tournament Play-In Round.
"This championship is great for our girls and for all of the alumni, who have raised our program to a new level," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "It was a great team effort. We executed our game plan. We knew we had to win the draw controls and we managed to dominate the battle and gain possession. We did a great job answering their scores and didn't allow them to make any runs after gaining the early lead."

    Congrats!!!

Lehigh Valley IronPigs rally to beat Buffalo Bisons

Kevin Frandsen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs rallied for a 7-2 win over Buffalo in front of a sellout crowd of 10,000 this afternoon at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown.

With one out in the sixth, catcher Erik Kratz earned a walk for the eighth consecutive game. Pinch-hitter Matt Miller drew a full-count walk and up stepped Josh Barfield.

Barfield, who had the Pigs’ only hit in the game up to that point, hit a dribbler through the right side, plating Kratz as Lehigh Valley (13-11) cut the deficit to 2-1.

On a 1-0 count in the next at-bat, Frandsen crushed a pitch from Buffalo starter Chris Schwinden over the left field wall for a 4-2 advantage.

Nix says Bills will try to keep Florence, not Whitner

With three defensive backs picked by the Bills in the 2011 draft, the status of a couple of veteran free agents became tenuous, at best.
One of them, cornerback Drayton Florence, could return. The other, safety Donte Whitner, apparently won’t.
That conclusion arises from comments made Monday by G.M. Buddy Nix during The Shredd & Ragan Show on WEDG in Buffalo.
“We think Drayton wants to be here, and we want him here,” Nix said regarding Florence. “We’re gonna try to sign Drayton Florence.”
And what about Whitner, the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft?
“Donte Whitner I don’t think wants to be here, and he probably won’t,” Nix said.
It’s refreshing to hear that kind of candor. And, when it comes to the NFL, it’s rare.

Herd's strong start wasted against IronPigs

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Buffalo Bisons will open an eight-game home stand Thursday night against the Louisville Bats feeling good about their starting pitching.
For the third game in a row Tuesday, the Herd received a strong starting pitching performance. However, it went to waste in a 3-2 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the morning finale of their four-game International League series at Coca-Cola Park. The Herd is off Wednesday.
Left-hander Pat Misch followed quality starts by Chris Schwinden and Josh Stinson with one of his own, leaving after the sixth inning of a 2-2 game. The IronPigs snapped the tie against Jose De La Torre (2-1) with a run in the seventh on Joel Naughton's RBI single after a leadoff double by Josh Barfield.

Sabres led NHL in first-round TV ratings

Buffalo’s status as a hockey-watching town received another boost today. The Sabres announced they led the NHL in ratings for the first round of the playoffs.
The Sabres’ series with Philadelphia featured six games on their home channel of MSG. Buffalo averaged an 18.8 rating (119,000 homes) on MSG, more than two points ahead of Pittsburgh’s 16.5 for its seven games against Tampa Bay. The 18.8 doesn’t include the 24.0 rating that Buffalo achieved for NBC’s broadcast of Game Six.
The Sabres’ Game Seven loss in Philadelphia on April 26 averaged a season-high 19.7 on MSG. The finale peaked at 24.1 between 8:15-8:30 p.m., and an average of 126,000 homes tuned in to watch.
"This was a perfect stew," Sabres President Ted Black told The News. "People love to watch a team when it’s winning, and it was an exciting team to watch. All the games down the stretch were tight. All the games in the series were tight, except for the last one.
"I’m excited to see where we can take it. When we’re really clicking and when we’re winning that Stanley Cup, you’re going to see astronomical ratings around here."

UB's Thomas Drafted By Hometown Team

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo cornerback Josh Thomas was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. The Cedar Hill, TX native gets to play for his hometown team.
Thomas was chosen with the 143rd pick. Since 1969, Ed Ellis (125th pick in 1997) is the only other UB player selected sooner. It marks the third time in the past four NFL Drafts a Buffalo player has been selected. Trevor Scott (Oakland Raiders) and Jamey Richard (Indianapolis Colts) were drafted in 2008. James Starks was picked by the Green Bay Packers in 2010.
A mainstay in Buffalo's dominant defensive backfield, Thomas had 58 tackles (30 solo), two sacks and an interception his senior season. His eight pass breakups ranked second on the team.

Phil Hansen going up on Buffalo Bills' Wall of Fame

Phil Hansen looks back on his 11-year career with the Buffalo Bills with great pride and fondness.

But the classy-if-not-flashy defensive end does have one regret: not being around in the late 1980s when the players that formed the foundation of teams that appeared in a record four consecutive Super Bowls were coming together.
Greats such as Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Kent Hull, Andre Reed and Darryl Talley.

"Those were the building years and where those bonds were made between those players," Hansen said. "They accepted me when I got there, but I never really felt a part of that great group ... those guys that made that team what it was by the time they got to (their first) Super Bowl. I got there for the frosting on the cake, not the first layer."
But just as a cake needs frosting to taste good, Buffalo needed Hansen to stay good.
