    Bills oust Modrak

The Buffalo Bills announced they have relieved Tom Modrak from his duties as vice president of college scouting. Modrak served the Bills since June 2001 as a top executive in the football department.
His departure is not a shock, given the team's lack of success on the field the past decade. In addition, any changes NFL teams make to their scouting lineup most often come at the start of May, after the draft.
"This is the time of year when we evaluate every element of our football operation and with the draft now completed, we have decided to reorganize our personnel department," said Buddy Nix, Bills executive vice president and general manager, in a statement. "We have begun that process and made a decision to head in a different direction. We thank Tom for his 10 years of dedication to our organization and wish him the best in his future endeavors."
Modrak was intimately involved in the scouting and preparation for last weekend's NFL Draft. However, the Bills have added to their football administration since Nix was hired at the end of the 2009 season. Doug Whaley is the Bills' assistant general manager and director of pro personnel. He scouts top college prospects across the country throughout the college season, as does Nix. The Bills also added Darrell Moody, hired from San Diego, as a national scout last year.
The surprise, for a lot of Bills fans, is Modrak lasted as long as he did with the Bills' organization.

Local firm hopes to score points with Bills' new field

Longtime Buffalo fan from East Amherst finally gets a chance to leave his mark on Ralph Wilson Stadium

    Updated: May 8, 2011, 8:27 AM
Jim Dobmeier is a devout Buffalo Bills fan, a season-ticket holder who has watched plenty of winning and losing seasons.
He is about to have influence on his favorite team's games in a way the most passionate, vocal fan cannot match. The Cheektowaga-based company Dobmeier founded, A-Turf, was selected to install a new artificial playing surface for Ralph Wilson Stadium.
"I'm looking forward to opening day," Dobmeier said. "It's going to be exciting."
As Marv Levy might say, where else would Dobmeier rather be at kickoff?
The project will proceed regardless of what happens in the labor dispute between the National Football League and its players, which has left the upcoming NFL season in limbo.
A-Turf will remove the stadium's existing artificial turf, which was installed in 2003 by a company called SRI Sports. Then, over the course of two and a half weeks, A-Turf will install its own 86,000- square-foot surface, a system called the Titan. The project will take place during June and July.

    Rock out-smart Bandits

    By Terry Koshan, QMI Agency

BUFFALO — If the Toronto Rock is going to win its first Champion’s Cup in six years, it’s going to have to be a lot more consistent.
The Rock shrugged off a couple of bewildering lapses to beat the Buffalo Bandits 12-11 in the National Lacrosse League Eastern Division final at HSBC Arena.
Toronto next weekend will play the winner of the Western final between the Calgary Roughnecks and Washington Stealth, a game that was played late Saturday night.

Louisville lefty Cochran silences Herd hitters

Takes no-hitter into the sixth of 3-1 win.

    Updated: May 8, 2011, 12:35 AM
Disregard the fact that the Buffalo Bisons stranded six men on base and how they whiffed on four opportunities with runners in scoring position. Tom Cochran still dominated on the mound.
His work of art played a huge role in the Herd's 3-1 loss to the Louisville Bats on Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Leaning heavily on a change-up and fastball before finding movement on his curve later on, Cochran (4-0) threw 5 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball until the Bisons' Luis Hernandez doubled to left in the sixth with two out.
"It stunk, but it's one of those things where you have to keep battling and try and keep us in the best situation I possibly could to win," Cochran said. "I was thinking about it but it is what it is."
After Lucas Duda and Valentino Pascucci hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh, Cochran was lifted. The veteran left-hander didn't allow a run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

    Bats Shutout Bisons 8-0

Buffalo, N.Y. (bisons.com) - Louisville starter Matt Maloney had it all working on Sunday afternoon against the Bisons...on the mound and at the plate.
The Bats' southpaw pitched seven shutout innings -and had three hits- in an 8-0 victory over the Bisons on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Todd Frazier added three big hits of his own as Louisville earned a split of the four-game series.
