Buffalo Bills team report: Gailey confident in Fitzpatrick

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Bills coach Chan Gailey has no concerns about his franchise quarterback bouncing back from what was his worst game of the season. In Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, Fitzpatrick threw for a season-low 191 yards and was intercepted twice.
"I think he will," Gailey said when asked if Fitzpatrick would bounce back. "I don't think there's any question. He's already done that this year, and I think he will continue to do it. If that was my biggest problem, I wouldn't have any problems."

The Jets were a bad matchup for Fitzpatrick. They were able to play press man coverage against his receivers, taking away the quick slant routes he has favored this season.
The good news for the Bills is very few teams can match the personnel the Jets possess, so Fitzpatrick should be able to once again find his rhythm. The team hopes that happens Sunday at Dallas.

    Boston 6, Buffalo 2

BOSTON - Tyler Seguin scored twice and had an assist as the Boston Bruins increased their season-high winning streak to five with a 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists, Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly had a goal and an assist each, and Zdeno Chara assisted on two goals for Boston (8-7), which has a winning record for the first time this season.

Buffalo took a 1-0 on a misplay by Thomas, who got handcuffed on a shot by Thomas Vanek. Thomas knocked the puck back behind the net and Vanek banked the rebound off Thomas’ pads and into the net with 14:22 left.

Bills traveled long road with success

C.J. Spiller and the Bills’ running game helped sustain drives Sunday against Jacksonville, which helped lead them to a 27-20 victory. Buffalo had 198 yards rushing. James P. McCoy/ Buffalo News

    By Jay Skurski
    December 18, 2013

The Buffalo Bills turned in three of their most impressive touchdown drives of the season Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rookie quarterback EJ Manuel and Co. went at least 70 yards on three drives that ended in touchdowns, the first time that’s happened in a single game this year. Each of those possessions lasted at least eight plays — Buffalo had only six touchdown drives of at least that many snaps and yards heading into Week 15.

Perhaps most impressive: the Bills faced only one third down during the three drives combined. Receiver T.J. Graham drew a pass interference penalty in the first quarter on a third-and-2 play to extend Buffalo’s first touchdown drive.

“Those are the things that you get excited about and at the same time you get frustrated about because you want that more and more,” Bills coach Doug Marrone said. “I think it shows the capability of what you can do and then it comes a matter of time. Again, it goes back to … being consistent.”

The Bills altered their approach slightly on each of the scoring drives, opting to huddle on selected plays. As a result, they used a combined 11:53 of playing time.

“It helps our defense rest up and that’s the biggest thing,” running back C.J. Spiller said. “When the defense is rested you could see what they were able to do. We try to keep those guys fresh as possible and we have to continue to do a great job with that.”

Buffalo’s offensive drive numbers were not pretty heading into Sunday’s game. According to statistics kept by Football Outsiders, the Bills ranked 29th in the NFL in both yards and points per drive, with 25.36 and 1.45, respectively, through Week 14. They also were 27th in plays per drive, with 5.36, 31st in time of possession per drive (2:06) and 30th in the website’s “Drive Success Rate,” which measures the percentage of down series that result in a first down or touchdown (excluding kneeldowns).

“I think that’s part of our maturation as an offense — especially as young guys in the skill positions — understanding the situations,” quarterback EJ Manuel said. “It was huge for us to keep those drives going.”

Buffalo’s first touchdown drive covered 94 yards — the longest of the season. Manuel completed passes of 20 yards to Robert Woods and 28 yards to rookie tight end Chris Gragg to pick up more than half that yardage, but a pair of 11-yard runs — one each by Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller — gave the offense balance.

“It’s encouraging when we’re able to run the ball when you look at those drives,” Marrone said.

After the 94-yard drive by the offense tied the game, 10-10, the Bills’ defense forced a three-and-out by Jacksonville.

On the next possession, Manuel directed an eight-play, 72-yard march for a 17-10 lead. Manuel completed a 17-yard pass to Woods. The other seven plays were runs, including a gain of 19 yards by Jackson. Manuel finished the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw.

“Using my versatility is a huge thing — especially playing against a defense that plays Cover Two and they try to drop a lot of guys into coverage,” he said. “So when I saw an opening, I just wanted to take off.”

The Bills’ 198 rushing yards marked the fourth time this season they’ve run for at least 195 in a game.

“Those things are encouraging — knowing that they know what you’re going to do and you go ahead and do it,” Marrone said.

More good news - the Bills finished things in the red zone. Buffalo has done a good job of getting points when it gets inside the 20-yard line of the opposition, but too often those have come on field goals, not touchdowns. On 36 trips to the red zone, Buffalo has points on 34 occasions, an NFL-leading 94.4 percent of time. Sunday, the Bills were a perfect 3 for 3 on reaching the end zone after getting to Jacksonville’s 20-yard line. The Bills are 18 of 36 (50 percent) in red-zone touchdown efficiency, tied for 25th in the NFL.

“What makes you feel good is your plan goes according to plan and you’re able to go out there and execute it,” Marrone said. “That’s what’s good. That’s what keeps you going and keeps people pushing.”

Default Bills Today: Benjamin finally has time to learn the playbook

1 - Benjamin finally has time to learn the playbook
He’s the Bills number one wide receiver and he is reaching a level of comfort that he had trouble finding last season. It’s never easy to be traded in any professional sport, but in the NFL, in the middle of the season, Kelvin Benjamin went from knowing the Carolina Panthers playbook, to knowing nothing about his new offense.
Benjamin first took the field for the Bills in Week 10 last season, but he was playing a step behind everyone else, and not because of his knee.“Last season, it was different because I didn’t really learn the playbook,” said Benjamin. “I really only learned that week’s game plan. I’d only know the plays going in this week, and then going into the next week, I had to sort of forget those plays and learn the new ones. I was on a week-to-week basis and I just had to stay extra and kind of just cram it all in.”Now, Benjamin has to start over with an entirely new offensive playbook including a new offensive coordinator in Brian Daboll, but Benjamin has enjoyed his experience with his new OC so far.“He’s great, man. I mean because he listens to you,” said Benjamin. “He’s not one of those OCs who just put the playbook in front of you, you know. He asks you questions a lot. He asks you questions about routes that you like, asks you about plays that you like and ‘Do you want to move around? Can you handle this?’ All those types of things, that just show that he cares about you as a player. He cares about you as a person and he wants to win.”And when it comes to comfort level, Benjamin compares this year and last year as night and day.“I feel like I’m a QB out there because I know pretty much what everybody’s doing,” said Benjamin. “Last year, I only knew what I was doing.”

Default Buffalo Wings Baseball - June 14-17

Get your wet naps ready, Buffalo, NY…'Buffalo Wings' Baseball is going to be served up at Coca-Cola Field this season.
The Bisons will change their team name and identity to the 'Buffalo Wings' for a four-game showdown with the Rochester Plates (Red Wings), Thursday, June 14-Sunday, June 17.
For the matchup, the team has introduced a new 'Buffalo Wings' team logo, jersey design and red & orange color scheme to honor the legendary meal that was born right here in Buffalo and is synonymous with enjoying great sports moments with family and friends.
"While chicken wings are enjoyed throughout the world, if you really want to get a true order of wings, you have to do it in Western New York. So it's only fitting that Buffalo's hometown team adopt the moniker of its most famous food item," said Mike Buczkowski, VP/General Manager of the Buffalo Bisons. "Wings were born in Buffalo, and since then the debate over what's the best meal to enjoy while watching a great game at the ballpark or anywhere officially ended."
Along with introducing the 'Buffalo Wings' new look, the team has put on-field and flex-fit caps, t-shirts and replica jerseys on sale
