Having had a couple bunion surgeries over the last 20 yrs, I LIVE for my ASICS. I've got about 10 pairs right now. I also use Powerstep orthodics in them instead of the insole that comes w/ the shoe to help w/ better arch support (and is sufficiently good to not require me to spend $600 on custom orthodics as recommended.... or more like pitched to me by my podiatrist). They've gotten me thru probably a sum total of 3 years of cardio.

I used to be a faithful Asics but for what ever reason I'm a nike whore now. . . . I will have to go back and revisit Asics very very soon!

Ya my Asics have been great so far! I do wanna try the nikes aswell though! Doing a lot of inside cardio I have learnt that a person should avoid anything with to much cushion! My pair of shoes just happen to have the perfect amount!

I've found that with Asics, the cushioning is proportional to the amount of money you spend for them. The more expensive models ($50-80 or better $80-120) have a lot more cushioning and comfort than the cheaper models (under $50). I've had all levels and have found that the ones in the upper middle end...$70-90....are perfectly fine.

I like and have a lot of Adidas, Nike, Saucony and New Balance shoes. Brooks also feels real good to my feet. Just a guys' perspective and choice....

I've tried others and always end up back with Asics. Nothing beats their cushioning and support.

Good to see there is a thread about sneakers.. Was just talking to my fiance' this morning about trying to find out what the best weight lifting sneakers are.. Are the Asics good for supporting the lower back and for lifting super heavy? I have 2 herniated discs, I have about 10 pairs of Nike Airmax and Shox, i've also tried Pumas.. You name it.. and its still super frustrating because nothing seems to alleviate the pressure on my lower back.. I will do some research on the Asics. Any other suggestions you guys have for me?

    Here ya go: http://www.powersteps.com/products

    - After 20 yrs of trying to use the 3/4 length custom orhodics and always having to cut the insoles of my tennis shoes to match the 3/4, I prefer to buy the full-length orthodic inserts. I just make sure that the shoes that I buy have easily removable insoles (i.e. not glued in - just easier to remove & swap out). ASICS all have easily removable insoles.

The Powerstep products run around $30. They last a long time and are great, and are comparable to the quality and usefulness of custom orthodics (at ~$600 per), so as I mentioned in my post above - the women in my mom's side of the family all have hereditarily horrid bunions. I had both feet worked on when I was 25 and the lady who did my pre-op physical made the comment that I had the feet of a 70 yr old, to give you an idea of how bad they were. I had a second surgery 3 years ago because the left foot was so bad.

To me, these orthodics support my feet like I need them to and have been pain-free (at least relative to the bunions .. have developed plantar fasciitis the last 3 yrs or so, unrelated to the bunions or my shoes) thru 4 competitions and 2-3 hrs of cardio per day for each of them.

To GM's comment about the quality of support and cushion in ASICS being relative to what you spend on the shoes - you're going to be limited by how much support / cusion they put in the actual sole of the shoe, but as far as the insole, w/ Powersteps, you can probably make an older or cheaper pair of shoes more useable by replacing the insole. I've gotten an average of 3 years of very aggressive use out of each of my Powerstep orthodics. I rotate 2 pairs of them among a couple different pair of shoes.

If you are interested in buying these, I would suggest googling them - you'll find a number of places you can order them from. I would also google for a "Powerstep coupon" or "discount code" to see if there are any out there that you could use. I ordered a couple pairs of them around Christmas time when there were more discounts (e.g. free shipping, etc.).
