I have great success with myself and clients with the following:
Light weightvand learn the form!
6-12 reps for 6 sets
Squeeze at top, hold
Train a few times a week....calves recovery very quick

i'm not genetically blessed with good calves. I just train them once a week like any other body part.

I could never get calves to grow at all. Then one day, I looked up at the staircase at the gym. About 12 steps total.
So I grabbed a 45, and started at the first step and did 10 raises on that step. Then I moved to the next step, etc. etc.
After doing 300+ raises holding a 45, once a week for a month now I have the first growth I have ever had in my calves. It works for me.....
