Default Deadlifts - is there any point?

I really don't think standard deadlifts are of any use for hypertrophy. I enjoy doing them, I feel great throwing big weights around and grunting. The thing is, afterwards I dont feel a pump and dont feel I've stressed any specific muscles in particular. I just feel, well...tired I guess haha.

I just figure that if you want to train back thickness then you're better off doing rows, if you wanna train hams then do Romanian deadlifts, or for overall legs just do squats. Purely from a bodybuilding perspective I dont see where standard deadlifts have a place. And as far as just for boosting GH, well you can do that through any heavy compound exercise really, e.g. Bench or squats.

What are you guys thoughts on this?

Let's see your low back? I don't think there's any better exercise. Especially for back. Nothing hits my low and mid back like deads personally.

Haha well I'm not trying to offend any deadlift fanatics, just from personal experience I feel my lower back gets worked enough through heavy bent over rows and Romanian deadlifts anyway. And as for mid back, I definitely feel it more from rows.

Many buff people credit their backs thickness to deads. And powerlifters that deadlift all the time have a thick back as their biggest muscle group.

I think it's great for hams, ass, lower back, lats and upper back when done with a wide grip!

Honestly I do find rack deads slightly more benefical (from just below the knee) for back development, cause the first 1/8 of a dead from the floor really just strains my ass and hams

I like doing rack deads to finish off a back workout, so you can really really feel it in the muscles you want it to.

I started doing Deadlifts under the coaching of PJ Braun (hehe under) and I think they are definitely helping my glutes and hams START to develop better. by next year or next time I get on stage (not for my show in 6 weeks) they should be a whole new ball game.

If you are looking strictly for back - like Chode said Rack Deads are really really good for that. I've done those many times before.

So you're saying PJ helps your glutes while you do all the heavy work under him?

Dead lifting is a very effective training method and concept that assist in building a massive back greatly! However, it is not NEEDED to build mass on the back. It simply is the most effective though.

A lot of people don't like dead lifting because its too much work.
