After a few good sets of heavy deads I'm sore all over... So they must be doing something... But i'll skip them every few weeks to give my lower back a break.

Best information on this thread. When I first tried deadlifts, I didn't feel them anywhere and felt very uncomfortable but now it's one of my favorite movements. I change the weight and position in my workout to feel them more in my hams, lats, glutes, or lower back and sometimes just try for a lot of weight. I Recently tried rack deads at the end of a back workout and fucking loved it!

However, so much of our progress is affected and influenced by our mind so like Chode said, if you don't feel like they work for you then don't do them.

The problem is guys want to do rack pulls and partial movements. It's dangerous. You are trying to pull weights you really can't pull. Sure I get if there are goals etc. I just disagree with the movement. It becomes more about ego than really developing much of anything not to mention most guys are weak minded so they would rather avoid pulling from the floor. For a bodybuilder just do your rows, pulldowns and chins.

Not all bodybuilders are pussies. Matter of fact I got my best results when training with my friend who totalled 2000 at 181.

Haha oh man, I guess it really is me against the world on this one!

The crazy thing is, I'm sticking by my guns here. In response to some of the points mentioned, surely the CNS can be worked just as well from performing any compound lift with heavy enough weight, e.g. heavy squats or military presses etc.

And as for working the posterior chain, I'm sure that the lower back, glutes and hams are worked just as well with deep heavy squats and (as I keep mentioning) Romanian Deadlifts.

I don't know, but I just find personally that I really FEEL it more with heavy barbell rows or T bar rows, and heavy Romanian deads.
I stopped doing standard deadlifts about 3 months ago just to experiment, but trust me, it took a whole lot of courage to work up the nerve NOT to do deadlifts, just because it's one of those things that has been hounded into you since the beginning of time - "you HAVE to deadlift to grow", "you're not hardcore if you don't deadlift" etc.

In fact, funnily enough, at a show I competed in after I stopped doing standard deadlifts but added hyperextensions to the end of my back sessions, the feedback I got was that my “Christmas tree” looked a lot better than before!?

But like I said, deadlifts are fun and make me feel manly doing them, and my body type seems suited to them too (I'm quite short, only 5'8, with short legs) so I'm able to budge a fair bit of weight too, but I really don't think they're helping for actually packing on size. Great for strength and power, but not for size. I'd almost compare them to doing Power Cleans - another fun exercise that makes you feel hardcore swinging heavy weights around, but as far as being productive for bodybuilding I really don't see it.

Another argument, and I know a lot of you are gonna reply saying not to believe everything you read, but apparently a lot of the big pros don’t deadlift – e.g. Phil Heath, Jay Cutler (although apparently he started including them just a year or so ago), and Arnold Schwarzenegger just to name a few off the top of my head. In fact there’s someone else’s programme I checked out where standard deadlifts were absent – a certain Mr Palumbo.
But I dunno, it’s certainly a controversial topic, but I’m sticking to my theory for the moment until I hear a more compelling argument! In the words of Ron Burgandy, “agree to disagree”!

    * On a side note, just wanna say I don’t really appreciate the personal attacks. Please argue with me by all means, but accusing me of being a newbie who doesn’t know anything and accusing me of not training hard / lacking technique, all because of my username and the fact that I don’t post much … I mean jeez, come on now!
Sorry to bitch, but I could be Lou Ferrigno posting right now for all you know! (I’m not, but you get my point! Maybe I should change my username to “Big Jacked Guy Who’s Jacked and is Real Big and Lifts Big Weights Cos He’s Jacked and Big”?)
Anyway, just to defend my testicular fortitude, I’ve been training for a few years now as a natural and have 4 shows so far under my belt. I’m certainly not an expert, but I’m not a rookie either. Cheers.

Skinny....I threw up a thread and asked a question and got some good info. But remember, there is a lot of Testosterone, much less the other hundred peptides and things in this forum ! It's hard not to attack, when the test in your system automatically causes you to be more aggressive. I am a little that way since going on T therapy. Let a guy have it the other day for speeding through our work parking lot. Could have just said, hey, can you slow down a little?

I don't like deadlifts. At all. BUT, I started doing them about a month ago now. I only do a couple sets of 8, and heavy, on Back day to end the workout. One reason I hated them is cause I had form that sucked. Then I started doing them, and my form is a lot better...go figure.
The very first time I did them, I felt it the next day in my hammys and my lower back. Not pain, just sore muscles that were growing. And the more my lower back comes around, the more my ABS tone up to match.

Good luck. Doing em or not. At 6'1", it isn't much fun at all doing a deadlift either. But I'm doing them, and Squats too. Read a lot about the four lifts you should do in a week, mandatory, Squat, Dead, Bench, Military press(shoulder press). And the folks who say that in articles, and
folks that are just huge. So, I'm goin with it.

Again, good luck to you. Keep workin hard. I wish I was as big as those guys who put pics up...but I'll get there.

    This...

squats and deads will stim the CNS moreso than most other exercises....doing them will make you stronger overall.....period.....

can you get big and strong without them? of course....but they are two very beneficial lifts....Large compound moves like this one will not always lead to a pump, but the pump isnt always the be all end all of training a muscle.

I had to stop deadlifting heavy because of some lower back issues 2-3 years ago....i have slowly started to integrate them back into my workouts and my other lifts have all increased in weight since I have put them in....might not be all due to deadlifting, but I do think they contribute.

There's no better exercise for hypertrophy. Period.
