I agree. I was quoting him where he said he feels it more in his lower back when he goes deep. This leads me to believe his form is wavering and he is leaning forward, putting more stress on his lower back than he is his legs. If you are more upright and positioned correctly - you should really minimize any lower back interaction with the exercise. I agree with you fully.

I don't think the best way to develop muscle mass is with perfect form full range reps. Some of the biggest guys I know just toss around heavy weights with sloppy form and I admit it works for me to. With that said I see guys tossing around a pretty loose definition of squatting. Sorry bro but that wasn't a good squat. Your iliotibial band could be tight from going to heavy when you haven't built up the stability. One thing I like to do is toss on 135lbs and do a high bar olympic squat with a 2 second pause at the bottom focusing on stretching out my hips and legs. Also pistol squats have really helped stability on the knee but if your heavy work up slowly. Here is an impressive video of full range of motion and stability.

I know what pistol squats are and used to do tons of them when I first got my Crossfit Cert and was teaching a bunch of classes. I think everybody is misinterpreting the whole reason the video was posted... it was an intense ass set... like i said try it out yourself and video your form 315 for 20, then drop to 225 then drop to 135. Half reps or not your entire body will be hurting!

Some of my BEST leg gains occur when I cycle going deep with as heavy a weight as possible for a few months, with going shallow with as heavy a weight as possible for a few months, on all pressing/squating exercises. Going shallow and increasing the weight will really nail the quads. I love the guys that PREACH A to G squats, and they have a huge ass and so-so quads...

Good God...
Now everybody and their mama is an expert on how to squat.
He admitted it...he didn't go deep. Now get over it and go to the gym and squat yourself.
Sheesh...
