MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American boxing champion Nonito Donaire Jr. will submit himself to year-round drug testing to make sure that he won’t suffer the same fate that befell Haitian boxer Andre Berto.

Victor Conte, Donaire’s nutritionist, said the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion has enrolled in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) for the year-round testing."Whether Nonito has a fight or doesn't have a fight, he wants to go above and beyond anything Floyd Mayweather has done as far as drug testing goes. This is going to be true Olympic-style 365/24/7 drug testing," said Conte in Boxing Scene.

Donaire will begin the program a day after his July 7 unification bout against International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Jeffrey Mathebula.Conte said year-round testing will also be offered to Donaire's future opponents."They will be politely offered a sponsorship eight weeks out so they will have the same opportunity as Nonito to show they have nothing to hide," he said.Ironically, Conte is also the nutritionist of Berto who was found positive for nandrolone, a well known steroid.This led to the cancellation of his June 23 bout against Victor Ortiz.But Conte, who spent time in jail in 2005 for distributing steroids, denied giving Berto performance enhancement drugs.


“After his positive test was revealed, Andre admitted that he recently took some supplements that were not provided by me and did so without my knowledge. It is possible that one these supplements were contaminated with trace amounts of nandrolone and caused his positive test result,” he said in a separate Boxing Scene report.
