18 years. Started at 12 and stopped at 22. Started again at age 40 (32 years ago) and still train 6 days a week at age 72.
Its never too long or too late.

1 Week....most recently was when I went home for my mom's birthday over Memorial Day Weekend (and the next week). Drove up and surprised her.
She actually mentioned that I needed to go lift because I was antsy...I went and the gym sucked (old college gym with broken everything)
Besides that never really took anything more than a week or 10 days max off from the gym

ever since being serious about lifting, 1 year. fractured my elbow playing football.
gained about 30 pounds of fat. i could've at least done cardio but all i wanted to do was lift and i couldn't do it. never will i be so lazy again.

did you get mrsa at the gym? one of my number one scares at the gym, obviously not as scary as contracting HIV from a cut.
how long were you a smoker? i've known people who just can't quit despite trying a bunch of nicotine products but i also know people who have quit cold turkey with no issues. all one guy had to do was drink a lot of water throughout the day with a straw so he could chew on the straw.Last edited by Hydroshake; 06-25-2012 at 11:25 AM.

Mine is going along 7 months now, due to ruptured disk and another herniated disk as well. Have a Dr appt next month to hopefully get the ok to lift again. After losing close to 100lbs in 6 months to step on stage at 176, I am now back up to 220. Was going great till Smith Squats one morning. UGH...now just a waiting game.

i jabbed a screw into my hand and got it through that.
i smoked from 12-28. i was smoking 2+ packs per day of camel wides with the filters ripped off when i quit. one day in the gym i was coughing as usual and thought i bet if i quit smoking id stop coughing all the time. i quit that day. i bought a box of nicotine patches and used them but i still had the shakes pretty bad for a few days and the cravings screwed with me for a while. my thing was to carry cigarettes and a lighter with me so if the craving was ever too bad i could just smoke lol. i never did but i carried them for months.

Took 30 days off to help heal a shoulder injury 2 years back, not sure what it was possibly partial rotator cuff tear, or partial labrum tear, definitely helped heal the shoulder and now i am stronger then pre injury in the shoulder, also recently took 2 weeks off upper body only did legs and cardio to heal a bicep/forearm tendon issue i think got from using mixed grip on deadlifts that helped as well. Now i only do deads with double over hand grip.

Couple months recently, ironically it was because I was building my garage gym. I quit my gym thinking I'd have the gym set up within a month but it took longer than expected.

I was out of the gym for 4 weeks last summer due to a gun shot wound to my upper arm. In the first week I had surgery to have the bullet taken out of my arm. 3 weeks of recovery and I was back at it.

I've been working out for over 35 years. During that time I usually hit the gym only 3 - 6 monyhs due to my interest in other sports or outdoor adventures.

This summer will be 31 years training for me . Through that time my approach n goals have changed a couple times, of course like anyone else Ive had my share of injuries but i never stopped training or took layoffs . Ive alwaysed loved training so much that there would be no reason for a break . After a contest or something i would take 3 or so days off at best .
