My wife has high prolactin??
My wife who is 27 got her blood work done and she has high prolactin. They have referred her to a specialt in a few weeks. The doctor did not really explain any negatives or solutions but has sent her to see someone else. Please let me know if more info is needed? She is a natural if that makes any difference. Could anyone spread some light on what this could mean or things to lower it.
Thanks

Here is a list of some common causes for prolactin elevation:
*pregnancy
*a type of pituitary tumor (growth) that produces prolactin
*stress, exercise, nipple stimulation, chest wall lesions (scars, pacemakers), or sexual stimulation
*medications such as certain blood pressure medications, anti-nausea drugs or antipsychotics
*kidney failure
*cirrhosis of the liver
*primary hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)
*compression of the pituitary stalk from tumors, empty sella syndrome or sarcoidosis
An MRI test or CT scan enables a radiologist to see if a tumor is present or if compression of the pituitary stalk is causing the problem. There is presently some controversy as to when the MRI or CT scan is necessary, and in the current cost-cutting climate, the use of these types of tests is being evaluated with a more critical eye.
You have to pinpoint the cause before we can discuss treatment.

When I was in my late teens I stopped having my periods and had high prolactin level. CT scan was done. I had a small tumor on anterior pituitary. It really didn't cause a problem for me until I wanted to get pregnant. I had to take bromocriptine which made me very sick, but was able to get pregnant. In later years I took cabergoline(Dostinex) to suppress the tumor and high prolactin. That is when I got pregnant with 3rd child at age 30. A few years later after I started weight training, the problem seemed to have disappeared. My menstrual cycle is like clock work now, every 28 days except when I'm on a cycle of course.

Make sure she is tested for macroprolactin as well.
Macroprolactin will show up as prolactin in a routine screen, you need to test specifically for macroprolactin though.
Unlike all the other reasons for elevated prolactin, there isn't anything physiologically active about macroprolactin, it just needs to be checked once a year to make sure nothing has changed.
