Philosophy
My philosophy for competition is based on sound nutritin principles; the stuff that I learned in College and the understanding that no two people are alike. I have had people win shows on very high carbs and others have used very low carbs. Nothing going into a competition stratgey is written in stone. This analogy summarises my philosophy; if I were to plan a boat trip from Maine to New York City, I would plan on driving my boat at 20 knots in a straight line for about 14 hours. Thats the best plan. The real world; the weather is unpredictable, the tides can be ferocious, the winds may be blowing excessively hard which, in total means it may take me as much as 24 hours. The point; in a dieting phase, you have to be prepared to make constant adjustments based on the unknows. Just as there are unknows with the weather, there are unknowns with your body...it can be UNpredictable. Will your body's metabolism slow down? Will your msucles suddenly take on a flat appearance. The list is long, so you cant use a cookie-cutter approach to dieting and I dont. I have a plkan, but I realise I have to be flexible. Thats the approach I take.

Condition
Honestly; when I lefty Jay about 10 hours before prejudging, he was mostly silly looking. Exceptional condition, great size. So I really do not know why he lost his condition as the day went on. Do I think its harder to get into a peeled like condition. From my perspective. No it is not.

The saying I really am most confident in, and the place I feel most comportable in is when or where I respond to a competitor's question this way "I dont know" Some people I work with undertand that is actually a good sign while others almost faint. If you think you know (all the time) then you are full of BS, which, in many cases would qualify you to be a contest prep guru

Cardio
Chris you asked about taking the essential amino acids before training...would it negatively affect fat burning; no it would not. However, if I were you, I would take a whey based protein shake (my plug; yes I have one) and some additional BCAA after the training if you are going to do some cardio right after training. You can also take a fat bruner after the weights to skew the metabolism so it relies more on fatty aicds and less on amino acids. Thats the dilemma with getting lean; you have to coax the body to burn fat or fatty acids from body fat instead of it relying on amino acids/protein/msucle tissue.

Chris,
It's great to have you on board. Terrific posts so far!
My question: when you say you prefer higher intensity cardio, can you give an example of what you would have a client do? What heart rate do you feel is optimal? Which cardio machines?
Thanks!

Dave its all heart rate. I really do not give much credence to the type of machine, stairs, bike etc. The (most) bottom line is the heart rate. I love intervals. Two minutes all out like a madman followed by 2-3 easy minutes.
