Good questions, Sledge.
I will say that a 'tiny handful' of women bodybuilders were more popular in the 80s because of the network TV coverage of this cool new thing.
A few in the 90s would've popular because of the morning workout programs on ESPN and, to a lesser extent, the coverage of Fitness America and various NPC/IFBB events, also on ESPN.
From the 90s til now, though, the dropoff hasn't been worth measuring.

Wow. Is that what happened to her? If so, then yes she would be the standard of what not to do. I also heard that Denise Rutowski(sp) had some kind of mental breakdown after leaving the sport. She was badass.
SallyAnne, what's with the hostility. Your comments almost explain in a nutshell why a town meeting about our situation will never work. Are we going to exclude certain females because they can't handle real truth? Or when the subject comes up about whether or not we are responsible for what we bring to the stage are they going to leave the room for fear of persecution? I think not.
And what's the difference between gnarly women being asked some hardcore questions and Betty P. being jammed up with the what have you done for us lately stuff. I can see why she hasn't called another meeting if she thinks everyone is mad at her and want to sit and point fingers.
I asked a woman why she smoked cigs and she told me in a matter of fact way because she enjoyed it and wasn't planning to stop. Nuff said. Well do you care that you are polluting the air that I breathe? She said, nope. The cig laws got changed because the majority of people did care.
We will never get down to the bottom of how women feel about this madness unless we ask some questions. The purpose of this thread was to open up discussion and find what can we do, what should we do to make it better. Some might say it's fine just the way it is. But if the majority say we need to change then everyone should follow suit or get out the game.
Funny how SisterSteel can talk about female bodybuilders suffering from all kinds of mental illnesses and when I wrote an article about that very subject I spent another 25 pages having to justify my claims.
And thank all of you for the entertaining posts. It is a pleasure to read all the different views on the subject.
Oh and, wear Romano out? That's funny.

Your post made it clear that you feel other women have to answer to you or to the bodybuilding community. If not, you'd 'name names'. Maybe it's your delivery, but quite honestly - I think you're just trying to keep this thread going for your own personal reasons, so throw in something you know will stir up emotions in people. You remind me of Geraldo, and no one really takes him very seriously, either.
You are well aware that what you write will "stir up shit" (you confessed to being a shit stirrer) - so be prepared to take some of what you give. You are a woman who preaches that steroids are bad and should be banned from the sport, yet you take them yourself. You look down on others as if God himself put you in charge of saving women's bodybuilding, when all you're really trying to do is promote yourself and gain any kind of exposure you can in the industry.
A little humility goes a long way and you could use a good dose of it.

Gulp! You are misguided and have grossly misjudged my intentions. Promote myself? That's funny. Humble about what? I'm not the one who keeps this thread going. This is a hot topic. Some people are being overly sensitive about things. Perhaps my delivery does suck. The message is still there. And if I go down as the Rosa Parks of women's bodybuilding so be it.

Rosa stood for something truly worthwhile, even if unintentionally. This argument is hardly a fair and equitable comparison, and I understand perfectly well what your purpose is in saying that.

Lord. Have. Mercy.
You definitely sought to rile me up by going *there*.
...
History has taught us that the genie cannot be put back into the bottle. Yes, the current Ms. O figure looks a lot more 'natural' than figure pros of the past, but that doesn't mean that other competitors aren't still using. Once a person learns the balance between benefits and downsides...why would he/she quit?
I'm not going to tell you not to wage your crusade, but I am going to tell you that it's not a battle you will win when you are demanding that people be satisfied with inferior results.

Hahhahahahahahaha. The fact that you would even make that comment says so much about your personality. And the statement it's self completely eliminates the possibility. Oh, I'm just laughing at your perception of yourself so hard now.

Actually I changed my mind it's not funny. It's really kind of sad.
I believe if you think about it you'll realize that too.

That would be great if they brought back mixed pairs.

That statement would've been baffling even if - race card alert - Carolyn was not a woman of color.
Carolyn -
Good luck to you. Moving forward, you're going to need it.

Very well said. It is sad to read and hear what some will do to promote themselves. Truly sad!

I guess because you don't take me seriously you don't read my posts thouroughly. Drug use and drug abuse are two different things. Countless times I have said this and explained that abuse is when you see abrupt changes in your physiology - cycles that override what doctors prescribe to transgender patients.
FYI, I weigh the same as I did in Jr. High School. I don't growl when I talk, I don't have to tape down my monkey when I put on a posing suit, no parts of my skull is enlarged and I wear weaves and wigs because I love em' not because I need to.
You're right about one thing. God did annoint me to send a message to his people. And it don't have nothing to do with bodybuilding. Jesus saves. Not me.

this whole fucking thread makes my heart cry
its a sad sad situation
way too many women are suffering
why ?
its just so pointless
i have not read all the posts from the last post i made quite awhile ago
and don't know if i will ever
cuz round and round it goes
i did read the last few before this post
why i don't know
even bringing myself to this thread
to retrieve some of the content i posted for my own personal reasons
my heart started beating faster cuz i'm so passionate about this subject
and i have a sick feeling in my stomach
listen to your body... l
isten to your inner voice (wise words from Dave Palumbo to myself)
although i don't know if i did any good
at least i know in my heart that i tried
and i spoke the truth
and for that i'm grateful
if it changed one persons opinion
if it enlightened anyone to really the harsh realities of the sport
and what we deal with to some greater or lesser extent depending on the woman
no women is free from some of the negative effects of the drugs needed to take to compete

Live your life how you see fit
be who you wanna be
do what you wanna do
take responsibility for yourself & your actions
think of what you do & what you say & how it effects others lives
does it effect people in a negative or positive way ?
life is short
life is what you make of it
above all ~ be happy
to thine own self be true
all the best
sincerely
Dawn
