I'm not sure about long term side effects, but it's not bodyweight dependant
I'm 260 and 6mg will put me out like a light. Usually 3 is enough
9mg is a pretty high dose
I guess it might be wise to use some caution as it is a hormone based supplement

I am using Comatose with it, I am a ver ylight sleeper who usually wakes up 3-4 times per night to take a piss, with 9mg and Comatose it is only 1 time and immediately back to sleep.

Melatonin is not a "more is better" type supplement.
Some need .5mg's, some need 3mg's, some need 10mg's.
If you were taking 9mg's and not getting a good night sleep, you were not taking the optimal dose for you.
Start low, taper up, when you have lucid dreams, cut back by .5-1mg's.

Melatonin is deeply involved with one neuroanatomy.
Everyone is completely different in this regard. For an example, this is why SSRI's help some, and makes others commit suicide.

Almost pointless.
Diphenhydramine works on the same MOA as melatonin, they do not compliment each other well

Neither works well for someone with a true sleeping problem such a behavioral insomnia, or anxiety at bedtime. If either of those are the cause, only a Benzodiazepine or one of the prescription sleep aids will help. Melatonin will never help someone who has an anxiety based sleeping disorder which is usually the case with chronic insomniacs.

I agree, good post.
Although, I didn't see insomnia mentioned, so I never adressed it.
If anxiety is the case with insomnia, .5mg clonazepam is the end all be all. But withdrawals are a serious bitch.
L-theanine with phenibut works great for anxiety induced insomnia.

i started with 3 went to 6 and then 9... never got the crazy dreams everyone talks about... i tried to reduce my stress and that seemed to work and just stoped taking it cause i didnt think it was helping at all...

Well the most serious forms of insomnia are those which the individual gets extremely anxious about sleep itself, right around bedtime. They start worrying about how lack of sleep will not allow them to study or work the next day. This causes a full fledged panic attack and of course makes sleep impossible. You don't have a serious case of insomnia so I doubt you need a prescription. Believe me, Melatonin or anything over the counter for that matter, won't do shit for real sleep issues. It's a scam.

wasn't making fun. Was a guess because a lot of people have a bad time sleeping when dieting hard. I've experienced it, and melatonin didn't do much of anything to help.
I hope you're sleeping better these days, though.

It depends. For me, 3 - 6 mg would do it. If 9 seems to be your magic number, I think you've just solved your problem. Melatonin is a "tricky" sleep enhancer to work with, it might work or it might not work at all. Of course, you can say this with just about every other supplement but melatonin in particular. Also try Valerian Root; it smells a little funny but it should work. Take about 1-2 servings of valerian root with your melatonin and you should have a very good sound sleep.

I agree with you in the sense that melatonin will not solve the phycological-based anxiety preventing sleep issue in and of itself, however, saying its a scam based on that fact is a HUGE stretch. Melatonin IS a natural hormone that promotes a state conducive to sleep, and therefore CAN be beneficial. For those who have sleep anxiety, like I've had time to time throughout my life, NOTHING will work unless its on a psychological basis. Conquering it involves the person learning how to gain their own personal fortitude.
So again, Melatonin=useful for those w/o psychological issues, and therefore NOT a scam.
Oh yeah, and some of you are crazy for those high doses. When I use it, I cut the 3 mg pills into quarters, making it a .75mg dose. I take ONE .75mg dose to help. I find it works great. I FEEL the effect of it, and it helps me sleep great. The reason you want to keep the dose low is to mimmick the actual output that your body's own Pineal gland (should) produce. Higher doses than normal for the body is just BEGGING for problems IMO.
I also find Melatonin feels different than Bennadryl. Bennadryl makes me feel more numb/nodding-off drowsy, which I'm not complaining about, but still a marked difference nonetheless. I don't know whether or not it has the same method of action or not, but, I do know what I feel when on each.

Me too. I use straight diphenhydramine, 50 mg with 6 mg melatonin every night when dieting or on certain supplements. I know you are saying that they work in a similar way so they shouldn't compliment each other, Natron, but I find that diphenhydramine seems to keep me from going into rem sleep while melatonin seems to greatly enhance it. Do you know why that is? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I really am curious as I don't understand much of this.
My gf takes the 300 mcg pills, and I always laugh because I'd have to take 20 of them, but around 6 of those works for her. It is strange how differently it works for different people. I have a buddy that is my height and weight (around 230 give or take) and he feels like he can't function the next day after taking 6 mg of melatonin. 3 mg is his number- just to illustrate what was being said about not being weight dependent.
